Your Budget: $3500 or less

Usage & Expectations: Flight, space, and rail simulations (or buses or forklifts or whatever Aerosoft continues to invent); 3D modelling and Photoshop (for adding content to sims). Output to Dell 2412M, input via Saitek flight controls, Wacom digitizer tablet, standard keyboards and mice. Notebook computers run too hot and noisy, and do not allow maximum scenery without major FPS hits -- time to modernize with a real computer.

First of all is this a desktop or laptop? You mention a Dell 2412M but then say notebook computers run too hot and noisy.

Either way, what resolution is your monitor?

I tried to post the ticket number listing, but was told I could not due to a spam filter denying links -- even though I took them out. Copy and paste my number into the Load Configuration button and take a look. It is a desktop.

The Dell 2412M has a resolution of 1920 x 1200.

The HAFX case is the best for air cooling.  Your pick would be good for true liquid cooling.

I dropped the RAM from 32GB to 8GB, all that gaming can utilize.  If you have special need for 32GB just plug it back in.  Don' t know what 3D modeling would need.
 
I changed sli 560Ti to sli 570, better fps in your gaming. 
 
Changed mobo, seems to be the one most recommended.
 
Your power supply choice and A70 cpu cooler was right on..

I'll compromise: 16gb. Price then runs up to $2934.

3D (solid modelling, not stereoscopic 3D) eats as much RAM as you can feed it.

bp22 gave you the right build, only thing I will say is that for your use you probably need lot of ram os if you think 32GB is what you want then get it.

Ask DS specifically for this fan to be added to the top, so you endup with 4 x 200mm fans:

haf 200mm non led fan

Ask for vcore lower then 1.4 for your oc.

Hello taw2015...Yes, use the comment box, " Special Assembly / Testing Instructions"  at the bottom to request top fan and tell them to limit vcore to 1.4.  They hear it all the timeBig%20Smile
 
There is a small charge for fan, I think $20 but not sure.
 
vcore is the voltage to cpu cores.  It's the product of overclocking, the other being core speed Mhz.  A vcore of 1.4 or less gives you maximum oc performance with the longest life for the processor, in this case many years.

for flight sims, are you going to be playing flight simulator x?  If so, that is my main game and I can tell you about my experience with my new rig and FSX.

The vCore spec comment implies you could set it up to give even more performance with virtually no life Evil  to the processor, right? (Not that I'd want that, but someone else ...)

Got three lighting questions:

1) The case shown in my config has a red glow in the picture, but will the one that ships come with that?

2) Is lighting only for cooling tubes?

3) Can you flip a switch somewhere to flip it off and on at will?

1.  The HAFX case has a front 230mm fan with red LED for the lighting. A switch on top front panel can switch if off/on 
 
2.  Internal Chassis lighting System, not the first one listed which is for H20 tubing, is a set of cold cathode lighting tubes mounted internal for a red glow, or other colors if you select.   IMHO, they add a nice glow to the case.
 
3.  A switch mounted on the lower back panel, below i/o ports allows the lights to be toggle off/on.
 
Here's an example of internal lighting tubes mounted on the bottom...different case but same idea....Could be mounted elsewhere

ok let me discuss my review of my particular configuration with my experience with the main game I play, Microsoft Flight Simulator X.  Hopefully this will provide you with some insight as to how the game will play on a newer rig like mine and like the one that you will be getting, although you are planning for a different CPU..
 
I am not sure how familiar you are with FSX but if I will assume that you know the game is extremely computer resource demanding and from my experience and everything I have read, the game is very demanding on the CPU more than it is on the GPU.  Thats one of the main reasons I went with the 3930k six core chip over the 2600k.. plus I use the computer for other things too which needed the speed of the 3930k.  Now, FSX does not take advantage of all 6 cores of course, hopefully the new Microsoft Flight coming out in the next year or so will take advantage of it.  I cant say for sure how much of a difference in performance the 2600 cpu vs. the 3930 chip will be.
 
As for gameplay, I have settings on fsx mostly on high, some are maxed out some are not.. and I get frame rates from 15-100+ depending on how busy the scenery is that I am playing in.  The game is just so computer resource intensive.  On average I'd say I get around 25-40 frames per second.  In scenery that isnt that busy with buildings, planes, etc. I usually get like 40+ frame rates but in scenery like JFK or airports with tons of planes and other traffic, my frame rates go down to like 15-20 and some times even less.

I too am familiar with FSX, but always assumed there was a bottleneck with the GPU. I'd really like to know what kind of hybrid / custom system MS used to create the thing, then making the assumption it would run on what they claimed on the box.

yah i know... FSX also does not utilize SLI at all.. in fact I have read comments from people that have said that playing FSX on a system with SLI GPU's performs even worse than the single GPU...

also keep in mind that FSX runs faster on a solid state drive (SSD).... Initially, my rig came with the Intel 320 series 120gb SSD and a 1TB HDD.  After I got the computer, my 120gb of space was already reduced to 71gb after I powered it up for the first time... I then started to install all of my normal programs and I realized that if I installed FSX with all my add ons, I was going to be left with barely any space.  So I ended up buying another Intel 120gb SSD that I installed FSX on.  My FSX and add ons take about 30gb of space but it runs nicely.

Direct 9 / 10 / 11 aren't GPU-based at all? Solely a software graphics engine?

For HafX case the front top i/o panel has 2- USB 2.0  and 2- USB 3.0 ports.
 
The p8p67 Deluxe mobo has on the back panel  2- USB 3.0  and 8- USB 2.0 ports.

taw2085....that is a great build. The 1050hx Ps will have no trouble handling this rig.   The extra gpu ram and hdd don't t really draw that much.      Not sure of the LED color for front fan.   The fans are easy to swap. You'd d have to go to Corsair, Newegg, etc and see what they have for a 230mm fans.

Yep the link is dead. CM no longer lists it as before.    I believe the fan is the CoolerMaster 200mm MegaFlow Silent fan, non-led. DS should know. We bug them all the time with it.

If you ask DS to provide an OEM 200mm fan they will provide the correct one. CM keeps running out of this fan and you never know if it will be listed on their site.

that is a nice build. Why do you have two HDD drives and no SSD? You will get much better performance with the 1st drive being a SSD and the second drive for data storage.
