Budget: Around $5k (this build is quoted at $4.6K) Expectations: Solid desktop machine, stable, reliable, fast, for use with a 27" monitor at 2560x1440. Games will be installed locally, media files are on an external NAS. Usage: High-end gaming, HEVC video encoding, fast downloading (320 mbps feed), good multitasking (encoding usually runs as a background task). Special Needs: Single nVidia video card (no SLI, no AMD), good liquid cooling for CPU and video card, quiet operation. Hi fnord0.....To save some money , drop the 6850k for the 6800k, the only difference is the number of Pcie lanes for graphics cards. The 6800k has 28 lanes, more than enough for even an sli build.
Not sure why you picked the top end mobo, but maybe there's something on it you need. A lesser mobo would do you just fine. Drop the noise package. There's no room for sound deadening material to be installed and the fans are easily adjusted by yourself if needed, by Bios, software included with the mobo, etc. A 750 watt psu is also plenty for the single gtx 1080, but up to you. Just a way to save money. Hope this helps and good luck. |

Thank you, I will make some of the suggested revisions and post an updated build later on. I absolutely appreciate the feedback! More suggestions are welcome, especially as I'm technically well under budget and wouldn't mind spending a little more for a significant boost to performance or stability of this system. |

My original post was updated to incorporate feedback from bprat22.
I stepped up the CPU to a 6900K because with the cheaper power supply and motherboard it now fits within my budget and seems significantly faster than the 68xx family. Comments and suggestions are welcome. |

If your encoding can utlilize the 8 cores, and I believe .265 will, than it might be worth going to the 6900k. The 6900k does have a faster Turbo speed by just a little, but your added stage 1 overclock would make it irrelevant.
