Topic: Question about RAM speed Posted: 05 Apr 2017 at 10:56am |
I'm looking under Velox config and noticed something that caused some confusion. If you look at the "more info" link under the Intel Core i7 6800K 3.4GHz (6-Core) (Unlocked CPU) processor tab and go to memory specifications>memory type, it states DDR4 2400/2133. However when you go to the actual default RAM for the default build, it uses 32GB DDR4 3000MHz Digital Storm Performance Series.
My question is the extra speed used? Why the discrepancy? |

In most cases the 2100/2400 is the default speed of the ram. The higher 3000 mhz is one of the overclock speeds the ram stick has been tested to attain. The XMP profile is set in Bios to one of the frequencies on the ram stick.
That said, you might not get the 3000mhz, depending on the motherboard and CPU, each individual CPU having different abilities. The memory controller is on the CPU. For gaming and most apps, little or no real world performance difference between 2400 and 3000, other than feel good or bragging rights. |

Sorry to be dense. So if I selected 3000mhz ram and a MB that listed 3000 mhz as one of the O.C. speeds, DS would automatically do the bios such that it runs at 3000mhz?

Yes, I believe they would, or at least try to. Ram speed is tied to cpu overclock and sometimes one chip or the other don't play well with certain speeds. DS could give you a much better history and the chance of getting the 3000Mhz. There are cases, probably the exception and not the rule, of a system set to the 3000Mhz XMP profile on the ram and having to set it lower after setup because of issues.
FYI...for most apps and gaming, there is little performance difference between 3000mhz and 2400mhz for example. |
