Topic: Rig turns on for 5 seconds and back off on repeat Posted: 30 Dec 2016 at 2:25pm |
Hey guys! Not sure where to post this. I got a Vanquish 5 from DS back in August. It's been working perfectly until now.
I very rarely turn it completely off (just put it into sleep mode). I was out of town yesterday so I turned it totally off the other night. When I came back, I tried turning it back on, and it turns on for about 5 seconds and then turns back off. It does this on repeat until I flip the off switch on the power supply unit or pull the plug. I'm not even sure how to trouble shoot this beyond very simple things. I've tried plugging it into a different wall outlet and using a different power cord and neither works. I already have a ticket open, but I just wanted to see if anyone has any ideas I can try out before DS gets a hold of me. The specs for my system are: Processor: Intel Core i5 6500 3.2GHz Motherboard: ASUS/Gigabyte (intel H110 Chipset) System Memory: 8GB DDR4 2133MHz Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (EVGA ACX 2.0) Power Supply: 500W EVGA/Corsair If anyone has any ideas I could try out I'd be forever grateful. Thanks. |

Hi Hurgledurf.... This could be a bunch of things.
First, don't use sleep mode. While it works for some, for others it can cause a lot of issues, like corrupting files, drivers, accessories, etc. Unplug it from the wall and hold in the power on button for several seconds to purge the mobo of faults. Plug back in and try it. Getting back to the reboots.... Open the side panel and reseat the 24 pin plug and 6/8 pin plug going to the motherboard, after unplugging it from power. Same for the power connector going to the graphics card. Try it again. If still a problem, reseat your ram sticks and 1060. Remove the 1060 and try it. Then try just one ram stick at a time. We're looking for anything shorting and tripping the psu. Or just a unstable voltage that the psu senses and reboots. Check connections to your HDD and SSD. |

I tried removing the RAM sticks one at a time and unplugging my DVD drive. Unplugging the DVD drive caused it to stay on slightly longer before it shut off.
I unplugged it from the wall and help down the power button for 20 seconds and no luck. I looked around for scorch marks and didn't see anything, and I don't smell anything funny. There's also no motherboard beeps or anything. I tried removing the 24 pin so I could replug it, but it's REALLY in there. It would not budge whatsoever, and I don't feel comfortable trying to get it loose and breaking things even more than they already are. So I'm not sure what to do. If the 24 pin is that snug then it's probably good. When you unplugged the DVD did you disconnect both , the power and SATA data cable ?
Remove the 1060. Unplug it, remove the screw on the back I/o, release the latch lever on the front of its slot and pull out. Unplug the SSD if you have one. |

I unplugged the SATA and power cables from the SSD and the DVD drive (one device at a time) and the same result.
I removed the video card, and the computer stayed on. I couldn't actually check the video or anything, because I don't have a non-HDMI monitor. But I guess i've narrowed it down to the video card I guess. The thing is, is it the actual video card or is it the power supply? |

Yeah, my guess is the 1060. You can't plug into the motherboard near the USB, audio ? Not sure wht mobo you have and what video ports.
You can try plugging the card back in and try it. Probably a bad card, good troubleshooting, but sometimes a reseat is all it needs. It's possible that the 1060 driver is causing the issue. If you can get it plugged into the mobo integrated video then you can go into Device Manager, right click the 1060, delete, then reboot after putting the card back in. Windows will install a different driver, chances are, or just a good driver. It failing to even POST, meaning turns right off, tells me it's not the driver but a shorted1060. The drivers don't load until after POST. Edited by bprat22 - 30 Dec 2016 at 4:59pm |

Your right, it could be the psu under load, but the video card on booting really isn't putting out any load on the psu. A shorted 1060 makes more sense, but you never can say for sure.
Nice job. DS will have to get involved for the RMA, after they verify. You don't happen to have an older video card to try ? |

Nope. I wish I did. Wish I knew what broke the card.
Does this mean I'm gonna have to pack up the entire computer and mail it to them? I know some places will just mail you a new card and you send them back the old one. Either way, thanks for the help! |

Oh, also, I noticed that 2 pins on the USB 3.0 plug on the motherboard are broken off when I was going through and unplugging stuff. Ugh.

DS will ship you the card after putting a hold on your credit card for its cost, until they get back the old one. At least, the last I knew.
Make sure the USB pins aren't touching, shorting. If you don't need that port then it'll save you shipping it back, or having to replace the mobo yourself. You have my luck, it's Friday and nothing gets done until Monday. |

Is that port only for the front facing USB ports? If that's the case...Eh, whatever. Not worth the hassle of replacing the MOBO and/or shipping the entire computer.

The front case USB do plug into the mobo. You might be able to just plug into another mid board USB. Doesn't have to be a 3.0.
