Ordered yesterday, I got an email from DS telling me that the i7 6700k 4ghz is out of stock and I would have to wait 2 weeks. I've been given the option of going to an i5 6600k which is 3.5ghz and $133 less. Should I switch or wait for what I originally wanted? Would .5ghz have that significant of an impact on gaming? The build has a gtx 970 gpu. I don't really do video editing or live streaming or anything like that. The primary purpose of this machine would be for gaming.

I'd go for the i5-6600k and save some money. For gaming its excellent and the difference in clock speed is meaningless if you have it overclocked anyways. Not sure you did, so even that small amount difference in clock isn't noticeable for the most part. The draw for the i7 would be the added hyper threading for video apps, etc. Not to say it will never come into use with games but not much right now.
The Turbo speed is even less of a difference and that's what it'll run at in most games, assuming no overclocking. Edited by bprat22 - 24 Aug 2015 at 11:53am |

I opted out of the DS overclocking. I figured 4ghz was plenty anyway and I wanted to save the 50 bucks and thought I could always learn to overclock it myself later on if I really was inclined to. I guess i could overclock this easily to 4.

for a gamer on a low/medium budget i'd recommend the I5 as well. you won't get the same performance in physics intensive games as an I7, and you might have to drop some in game settings on certain games, but by and large it should serve you well. |
