Topic: SLATE build for Photoshop/Lightroom/AfterEffects Posted: 24 Nov 2017 at 8:54am |
Getting ready to order (today) my second build from Digital Storm (last one was almost 6 years ago) and I was hoping to pick the brains of people much smarter than me. ;)
Build: https://www.digitalstorm.com/configurator.asp?id=1782685 A few (probably novice) questions I'm running into: 1. Is the expansion bay with ASUS ThunderboltEX 3 Adapter give you a USB 3.1 GEN 2 port? Or is it just for displays and not storage devices? 2. I read Corsair 3200MHz Corsair Dominator Platinum DHX might be unstable/not work well over 2133MHz RAM. But I'm not sure about the Digital Storm sticks. 3.I was going to go with M.2 512GB Samsung 960 PRO but given today's deal on M.2 500GB Samsung 960 EVO, I changed it to that. Is there a lot of performance/stability difference between the two to justify shelling out extra $? 4. Probably a silly one: is it easy to install a PCIE wifi card and upgrade the soundcard if the ones built into the HERO MOBO turn out to be lacking? 5. Do Chasis fans make any difference (stock vs. Corsair) 6. Anyone knows how many total harddrives I can have in SLADE2? I generally like to have: 1. C-drive 2. SSD for Photoshop/LR/AE cache 3. 2TB SSD for current projects 4. 4TB HD to overflow current projects 5. Drive with work from previous year 6. Drive with work from 2 years prior Thanks so much! Budget: [under $5000] Expectations: [Stable, future-proof, fast build] Usage: [Photoshop, Lightroom, AfterEffects] Saved Ticket #: [1782685] Edited by marekd - 24 Nov 2017 at 8:59am |

1. not sure would have to refer to manual.
2. 3000mhz is the sweet spot, I would stick with that. 3. pro has faster speeds and better reliability/longevity. 4. if proper pci lanes are available yes it is very easy. 5. depends on your use, yes and no. more of a preference here. but if your case doesn't come with all the fans it can take I would add fans to it then. 6. your problem here is not the case but your mobo, if you look at m.2 configuration and limits of the mobo you will see you will have a problem sticking few m.2 drives and sata drives. personally I keep my drives separate from my pc aka external I have 8 hdds/ssds. I always advise that. the case itself holds 5 drives it looks like. hope that helps |

It does help! Thank you dst3me!
AD #2, my only hesitance is that I'm not sure how stable/reliable the "Digital Storm Certified" memory is. Without brand/model listed I can't figure out a way to research it. AD #6. Is there a board you would recommend that would make it possible to stick 2 x m.2 and 2 x SSD + HDD's without issues? I tried to research boards, but I just don't have enough experience to figure it out/be sure in my decision. Thanks again! |

#6 With m.2 drives it will be hard with regular sata ssd it easy the problem becomes the case.
also if the ssd-s are taking 2 pci ports and gpu is taking one plus a wifi card and sound card you see you are running out of pci lanes to connect to and that is without m.2 limitations that will impose on the mobo. What do you have against a good external drive with the ssd/hhd of your choice in it? #2 not sure where you read ram is not stable, but the ram DS uses here is adata. remember corsair and most companies don't make their own ram, only a few companies make ram, everyone buys it from them and slaps their name on it, same with psu. while I love corsair ram and psu, they don't make either. but their customer service, warranty is great and if you stick to hx and ax lines you will endup with a good quality psu. |

I went for the m.2 960 Pro instead and Corsair fans. I kept the Corsair RAM and stuck with the Hero board.
I'm not opposed to external drives though I love that internal drives save me clutter. Thank you again for your help. Order placed! Edited by marekd - 24 Nov 2017 at 5:00pm |

Quick Question: Can you post your final configuration? Looking for a LR/PS optimized rig as well and like your base setup. Just wanted to see what you ended up with to see if I want to emulate :) Cheers and thanks!
