The sound on the mobo these days is pretty good but if you can connect it to your DAC then I assume the DAC will take care of the rest but I'm not familiar with DAC so don't quote me on it

good to know. soon im gonna get a stax sr900 with woo audio wes amp. with upgraded tubes and custom interconnect and power cables. i have a creative SB x7 as my DAC right now but i want to upgrade to a better DAC.  i thought i would also need a good sound card with low jitter but when you connect a usb dac seems like it bypasses the sound card altogether

Yessum, go for the good amp and don't worry about the sound card since it's rendered moot. Big%20Smile

an external DAC bypasses the mobo's onboard converter, which can clean up the sound by removing hiss caused by all of the close proximity electrical components inside the case; however mobo (especially good ones) today do a pretty good job of shielding.  you'll need a headphone amp or DAC/amp combo unless you're hooking it up to speakers.  i personally use a very modestly priced JDS Labs ODAC with an SMSL sAP II headphone amp.  very cheap setup and that amp is way under priced for how well made and powerful it is.  i also favor it because it comes with a 6.5mm to 3.5mm jack conversion, which can save you from tearing out your jacks when you pull on them accidentally.  this combo also is an extremely low profile on my desktop space and is ultra portable as well.

the amp drives my 150 ohms Sennheiser 350 SE headphones extremely easily and is rated for 30-600 ohms.
