Topic: SSD INSTALL WIN7 BOOT Posted: 03 Jun 2017 at 4:44am |
Hello Fellow Enthusiasts,
I am awaiting parts to upgrade my 2010 DS computer. One of those parts is an SSD and I have some questions about making the SSD my boot drive for Win 7. 1. Can I remove my WD 500GB hard drive, install the SSD, and install a copy of Win 7 on the drive? 2. If that is possible, can I use the system reinstall disc that came with my computer or do I need a separate copy of Win 7 without the DS additions(overclocks, virus protection, etc.)? I am having problems with my present configuration and do not want to clone my WD500 to the new SSD. However, After I get the SSD installed and booting Win7; I want to reinstall (with new power and data cables)my WD500 and then pick and choose which programs to move to the SSD. I would then use the WD500 for storage of files, photos, etc. So is any of this feasible? If not, any suggestions on how to accomplish this changeover will be greatly appreciated. When you install the SSD and confirm it shows in Disc Management or Bios, power down, unhook the older drive from the mobo and reboot with Windows disc in drive. Follow install directions.
Once the OS is installed and boots successfully, then you can hookup the older drive and do what you want with it. Windows needs to boot to new drive without the older drive with OSon it, to know which drive is primary. |

bprat22,
Thanks for the info. So, does the windows disc need to be a new Win 7 only or can I use the system reboot disc that came with the computer? |

I'm not sure what's on the reboot Disc, but try booting to it and see if Windows install is an option. If not, a Windows Disc is needed. If it's the only Disc DS sent you then my guess is that it does have the OS on it for Recovery, install.
