Topic: System Upgrade Posted: 30 Oct 2015 at 10:21am |
I have a 5 year old DS machine, with Core I7 960 3.2GHz (Quad), 12 GB RAM, EVGA X58 motherboard and an nVidia GTX 570 1.2GB that I'd like to check on upgrading .
My primary needs are for Prepar3d, the Lockheed-Martin modification of Microsoft's Flight Simulator, and a couple of Pinnacle video production programs. The machine is great, but I'd like to increase my performance, without throwing away this machine and getting a new one. Anyone's experience with upgrading for those type programs (especially Prepar3d, or P3D) would be very much appreciated, but all upgrade suggestions are welcome, other than computer replacement. |

My advice would be to upgrade the 570 to a 970 if your frame rates are suffering. The added vram , from 1.2 to 4gb, alone would help if the system specs are accurate. Adding an SSD if you don't have one and putting the flight sim on it might make for a smoother experience if the game loads a lot of textures, traffic, distance , etc in game.
Looks like plenty of ram. Edited by bprat22 - 30 Oct 2015 at 11:24am |

Thanks for the suggestion. My frame rates are excellent away from cities, even with ORBX scenery running, but the extra stuff around cities quickly chews into the performance. MS Flight Sim is very CPU intensive, but LM has moved a lot of stuff to the GPU on P3D, so maybe that's where the improvement is needed.
It'll be a bit yet before I buy anything, but you've helped me decide what to look at. Thanks. |

My pleasure.
Up until a year or two ago I did alot of DCS A10, Black Shark and then the DCS World all in one setup with Huey. . Running a gtx 560 then 570 with an older i5-2500k clocked at 4.4 resulted in max gaming and excellent game play. FSX was another story.....kept it locked at 30fps and even then had to turn down traffic, distance, etc. Still played good. Haven't tried it since updating to a gtx 970. The FA/18 Superbug was going to be my next thing but I've been lazy lately. Still have my HOTAS TM Cougar with pedals and Tracir5 waiting for me to engage . Have fun. Viper out. |

that I7 isn't holding you back and it won't bottleneck a graphics upgrade either. also, you system ram is more than enough. a graphics upgrade like the other (real) bprat suggested would do you wonders.

Thanks, folks. I just ordered an EVGA GTX 970 FTW (overclocked), and expect it next week sometime.

As a followup, I got the 970 today, and it indeed does help. I noticed a mild increase in frame rate (2-5 fps) in certain areas, but it enabled me to add a lot of graphics intensive functions, by using better shadows, MUCH better weather, higher graphics settings (antialias, etc.), a lot more vegetation and buildings, and other things while maintaining the slightly improved frame rates.
So this preliminary look at it means that I am very pleased, so far, at the greatly improved overall performance (not just fps) in Prepar3d. Now I need to check heavier scenery areas, video processing applications, etc. to see what else I've gained. Thanks again for the opinions here, folks. |

As a final followup about Prepar3d and the GTX 970:
This morning I set sliders much higher, then departed Ashland, OR across Medford to Kellnuss (a small grass field I created, just north of Medford). I had 29-30 fps at Ashland, and it gradually reduced after takeoff until I had 18-20 fps across Medford (still 4-6 better than before), then 20-24 at Kellnuss. Settings were: MSAA 4 Samples Anisotropic 4x FXAA On Tessellation Factor Ultra Level of detail Radius Ultra Scenery Complexity, Veg Density and Building Density at Extremely Dense, Water Detail High HDR Lighting, Shadow Qual High, Terr and Cloud Cast Shadow 20,000m Cloud Draw Distance 100 mi, Clooud Coverage Density High (Detailed Clouds) Weather set to Orbx Weather 1. This is a lot higher than I've ever dared before. Leaving Kellnuss I changed the visibility to 40 miles, but the rest was the same as before, as I flew a 280º heading to near the coast, then GPS to Siletz Bay (S45) (with ORBX major enhancements). Throughout, to long final approach, I had 28-30 (locked at 30) fps, mostly 29.5 or better. On final to S45 it ran from 23-30 fps, then from the flare to parking through shutdown it was 29-30 fps. Wow! This would have brought my system to its knees with the GTX 570 I had before. Money WELL spent! Larry |

Good to hear.
Flight sims look and feel so much better when the settings are cranked up. Better immersion. Do you use TracKIR? Once I started using head tracking I could never go back. Target location and acquisition improved for the combat sims. Enjoy. Edited by bprat22 - 10 Nov 2015 at 1:01pm |

Yes, TrackIR is an integral part of my simming. It, along with the assignable buttons and axes on my stick/throttle, make it feel so much more natural, and easier to look around, orient yourself and just fly.
