Budget:
2500

Expectations:
To be as good or better than my 2014 ODE which I upgraded w/ a GTX 1070

Usage:
99% flight simulator, FSX and Prepar3d. Mostly Prepar3d now-a-days. I use Flyinside with an Oculus which is a VR flight sim.

Special Needs:
N/A

Saved Ticket #: N/A

Specifications:
Hi all - my water heater blew and my 2014 digital storm got immersed in 8" of water. Sad of course but also on the bright side insurance will cover the cost of a new machine ! So I'm here asking for help to choose my new machine. I pretty much exclusively use the computer for flight sim. I have a sim pit I built with Saitek pedals and thrustmaster HOTAS, I also use an Oculus and fly in VR most of the time as opposed to on a flat screen. Looking for something that has future growth. I am pretty much a Prepar3d user now, only flying FSX if I want super crisp refresh rates for some reason.

My old machine is below. I will say in the last few months I was getting a bit unhappy with the FPS in Prepared (no matter what I did to settings it maxed out around 35fps). FSX I would get excess of 50fps on a regular basis. If the new machine could increase my fps in Prepar3d that would be great. Not sure what was limiting there - I had a very powerful graphics card.

Looking forward to your suggestions for a new machine !

That is fine but IMHO you should let the person know best bang for the buck and non money saving build as you put it. Im sure when you are shopping you want to know the best bang for the buck vs all options maxed out, I do, so I try to treat people the same.

Having said that, if you read where you quoted me, you will see I'm asking op about his old pc with 1070 he said he was stuck on 50 fps and not about your config

That was the really frustrating part. Resolution didn't play heavily into the results. It may have been limited by the Flyinside software, which I think has limitations on resolution due to hardware constrains with the Oculus.

I always meant to mess around with the settings on my HD TV with the Oculus off, things always "looked" better on the TV, but I cared more for the immersive experience of the Oculus over the clarity of the TV. But the 35 fps in Prepar3d was less than ideal when using the Oculus, and like I said I never really figured out how to make that much better or worse, changing all the settings as recommended by Flyinside folks.

Prepar3d V4 recommended specs are:

8GB+ VRAM
quad core 3.5GHz+
16GB DDR4 2666Hz system memory
M.2 or SSD
Windows 10 64-bit

it's possible the DDR4 memory upgrade will speed things up for you.  the 1070 should've been enough, but the 1080 does have more cuda cores and texture units.

it's also possible an investment in a fast storage drive like a NVMe pcie drive might be worth it.  though your budget is going to necessitate some compromises somewhere.
