Topic: Time to upgrade? Posted: 16 Dec 2017 at 8:19am |
I have owned 2 Digital Storm computers and really like them. My current one has a i7-2600 3.40 with dual GTX 570 cards and 8GB ram. Wife is going to let me spend around 2 grand for a new one. I'm wondering if the I7-8700 3.2 with the GTX 1070 card is a worthy upgrade? Have not kept up with things the last couple of years. Thanks for you input!

Hi madmxe,
Welcome back. Some of the more knowledgeable members will show up and give advise. Maybe even helped you with those computers. One of the details that will help configure a system for you will be the resolution of the monitor you plan to use with it. Good luck. You know already know you are in the right place. |

Yes 8700k and 1070 is a good upgrade but the question is do you really need it? I think a gpu upgrade us all you need, is your cpu running stock speed or oced?

Res is 1970-1080 and I am not overclocked. I have noticed that I'm getting close to having to turn down the setting on some of the newer games. It does seem that PC's have hit a bit of a speed bump and the gains aren't as great as they used to be when you get a new machine. They are fun to get though. Thanks!

@DST4ME his cpu is not a K or X chip so the speed is limited.

Turbo is the same highest cores are 3.8/3.7, you can push it a little higher via turbo multiplier.
@madmxe, is turbo boost enabled on cpu? 1070 will do great at 1080p but then again I'm thinking your 2600 with turbo boost and 1070 will do great also |

Yes it is. It was overclocked to 4.5 when I first got it. I bought it in 2011. Had some issues and turned it off. I did not notice a great difference so just left it off.

Ok your oc is different from turbo boost. Your oc settings were too high. Which is why we tell people to oc themselves, its easy these days.
For you i would recommend enabling turbo boost in the bios and see if pc is stable under l00% cpu load. With good temps (below 80c). If so drop a 1070 or 1070 ti in there and see if you are happy, if not then order DS pc without gpu, once you get DS pc, drop your 1070 in it. Edited by DST4ME - 16 Dec 2017 at 2:06pm |

I am confused. How can you oc to 4.5 with a locked multiplier. ie, non K chip.

Some leave out the k hose, also the 2600 non k, can be pushed via turbo, its a bit more complicated than normal. Its very limited.
Not worth the hassle, IMHO the oc able version is always the best. Edited by DST4ME - 16 Dec 2017 at 3:27pm |

I would also suggest just swapping your sli 570 for a gtx 1070. It’ll be a huge increase in performance. Plus less heat, noise and power draw.
The old Sandy Bridge processors, 2500k and 2600k, are still excellent gaming chips. Ignoring some of the newer storage, USB techs, they still work. I also still have my 2500k clocked to 4.3. Benches I’ve seen comparing a gtx 1070 to a2600k vs 8700k shows about a 5% difference. Not bad for a 6 year old cpu. |

You are going to be very happy with the refreshed pc and more importantly so will your wife for the savings. Maybe a surprise gift for her.

Yes hoserator she is a pretty good wife and I do have something nice for her. I am shopping these cards and there are quite a few choices. As long as its a GTX 1070 with 8 GB ram I'm good right? Thanks again for the advice.

I'd probably upgrade the CPU and GPU. The 2000 and 3000 series CPU's have shown bottlenecking with current gen GPU's and even more so as we move towards Volta. With a budget of $2k... I'm going to assume it's not just for upgrades, but towards a new system all together, so perhaps the point is moot.
But if you're planning on staying at 1080p, the GTX 1070 will kill. It likes to stretch it's legs at the 1440p mark too.. I'd probably pick up a 1070 Ti if I wasn't going to overclock with an 8700k (might as well get the k vs the non k, that way in a couple of years you can overclock it vs upgrading to a new CPU). |
