Topic: Triton Storage options Posted: 02 Apr 2016 at 9:45pm |
When I am customizing the Triton, I have a question on the storage options.
I can select 2 SSD's for storage, so I am assuming there are connections for both. However, if I select an M.2 drive for my primary storage, why can I not select a 3rd SSD since nothing should be in that slot correct? Also the description for the Triton says it supports 4 M.2 drives, but the configuration on has options for 2 drives Edited by tritian - 02 Apr 2016 at 10:01pm |

I would email or call DS next week to sort it out. Sometimes their configurator is geared to the majority of buyers and kept lighter weight to make building easier and less confusing.

that system can only support 1 m.2 drive. it uses an m.2 slot for the wifi/bluetooth device also.
also, i think the description means it supports x4 m.2 speed, not 4 physical m.2 storage devices. i've only seen 1 (ASRock Extreme 7+) high end z170 board boast 3x m.2 ssd devices supported and z170 is going to have more connectivity than an "H" model board will. "With support for four M.2 PCIe Gen3 capability (up to 2200MB/s), hardware RAID, and dual hard drives, the Avon is fully equipped to handle your storage needs now and in the future."
That reads to me that is supports 4 drives. I thought this would be comparable to the competitions laptop (Aorus specifically) Now this may be a mistake and it is only supported in the Avon, not the Triton. But the same 2 drive config is available for the Avon as well. I will definitely call DS tomorrow. |

i saw that promo wording as well. i don't know how they will achieve that, tbh. how do they fit a pcie gpu+4 pcie drives+the wifi card that occupies a pcie slot into a 100 series board? at least the Avon uses a "Z" board, which has more chipset connectivity than the "H" model in the Triton. still, not seeing how that's possible, and their configurator would seem to agree, because i tried configuring just 2 m.2 drives on both systems and got errors with config compatibility. it would be nice to have DS chime in here on the forums.
perhaps they're talking about SATA drives? however, that wasn't an option in their configurator. Edited by db188 - 03 Apr 2016 at 11:08pm |

Called DS. Sales wasn't sure, but got a tech on the line. He was going back to verify the hardware to see what is physically possible in comparison to the description on the website. Waiting on a call back. I will let you all know what they say.

Thanks. Would be interested to see. Two of the m.2 do mention on the Sager site that they are factory installed, which usually means under the keyboard after removing it. But not sure in this case.

i've seen a vid on an opened up (remove the bottom panel) Aorus X5Sv5- it has 2x m.2 drive slots (1 of which is occupied by the wifi card) and a 2.5" HDD or SSD drive slot.
RST (rapid storage tech)14 only supports 3 pcie devices at one time, so you can only raid up to 3 drives, not 4. still, you would lose all the extra SATA ports while doing so, and they'll have to use controllers (or Thunderbolt) for everything else (i.e. USB, ethernet, etc.). the claimed speed (4 drives each with 2200Mb/s) is what throws it off for me. if these were 4 SATA drives speed would be 600Mb/s. so they have to be x4 speed pcie m.2 drives. |

Got the call back.
Yes I can order it with 2X SSD's AND a single M.2 drive. The website does not allow for this configuration, but it is possible in the machine and you can call in and have it done. As db188 mentioned the second M.2 slot is used by the wifi card. They need to update the inaccurate product description and hopefully update the configurator to allow for a storage 3 option. So what about this? 512 GB Samsung M.2 Drive for boot + 2X Samsung 1TB EVO in Raid 0? |

i'm sold on the 512GB Samsung 950 Pro m.2 pcie nvme drive. i'm not so sure about RAID 0 with the the 2x Evo's. it will give you twice the speed but at more risk of data loss. where do you intend to put crucial data?

One of the reasons why we don't offer such configurations is that we don't really recommend customers doing a RAID 9 array with two SSDs. Stick with an NVMe drive for your primary storage, and get a second hard drive for data. If you want fast storage, go with a single 2TB SSD for example, or a 1TB.

Ok so no Raid 0 on the SSD's :) Still better to offer all 3 drives.

Agreed. I have a slightly older Krypton with an mSATA primary, 750GB platter drive and a 1TB SSD I added later on. All the storage you can get, I say. |
