Hi RLee... Sounds like something running in the background, not letting the rig shut down.
Try going into Task Manager, right click bottom task bar and hit Task Manager, or Ctrl..Alt..Delete and select, and see what's running under Appications. Or, under Processes, look at cpu and memory columns for high usage. You can click and select to shutdown a program you don't want to run. Windows might also be doing updates. It should stop but...... Have you added anything external like usb hub, drive, programmable joystick/keyboard? Run an anti-virus or download the free Malwarebytes and run it to see if a virus, trojan, etc. is messing with you. Edited by bprat22 - 01 Feb 2013 at 10:43am |

There are a couple ways to check things out. One is Event Viewer and the other is Performance Monitor with the reliability switch. PERFMON /REL
You can also get a program WHOCRASHED if your system is making a crash dump. Those will get you pointed in the right direction. To allow Windows to shut down the machine. Control Panel / System / Advanced system settings Advanced Tab Startup and Recovery and select the settings button Under System Failure uncheck Automatically Restart |

Thanks for reply bprat22,Only thing I noticed that seemed unusual was 4 iexplore.exe running under processes
1.12,240k 2.54,456k 3. 82,644k 4.59,604k I'm no expert but why are their 4 iexplore.exe's ? |

If you're opening Task manager while surfing with multi tabs that might be it, but not sure.
Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance Info/ Advanced and see if a message is dislpayed mentioning Windows detected programs causing a slow shutdown. If so, click on it . If a no-go then start in Safe Mode, usually F8, hit Safe Mode and then shutdown and see. If there's an errant program that might do it. Just saw JerryW's post. Try that. Could be many things. Do the Malwarebytes just in case, also. Edit... just found it...Here's a link for a Clean Boot.. Try it if all else fails. If it shutsdown fine after then you need to start enabling programs to isolate the problem. Can be a real pain. Edited by bprat22 - 01 Feb 2013 at 11:26am |

If it does 't shutdown in Safe Mode, I'm thinking, guessing, you have a hardware problem. Go into Bios and load default profile to disable overclocking. If that doesn't work then reseat all your ram sticks, even trying one at a time. Run memtest to check them. Overclock and ram are related.
Try booting with Windows disc in drive and selecting Repair. Call DS if you can. They can Remote and have alot more tools to help. I would love to know what you find. Edited by bprat22 - 01 Feb 2013 at 2:50pm |

bbrat22,DS tech helped me by resetting jumper pins, system shuts down fine now,but sometimes I have to turn power off & back on to get it to start. I now have a new problem, when I try to install new nividia graphics drivers I end up sooner or later getting BSOD and it says something about nvlddmkm.sys file of which I've been researching.Don't know if I can fix that or not.Thought I would let you know about the first problem. Thanks

I really appreciate the feedback. If the jumpers were on the mobo it could've been a cmos reset to start from scratch. Thanks.
That new fault is usually a graphic driver problem.. If the normal method doesn't work, you can go into Device manager, right click your graphics card, Uninstall or Update from there , hard reboot, not Restart from Start button, and let Windows do its thing. I have never had to use it, but some have had great luck with Driver Sweeper to get rid of all the old drivers to eliminate conflicts. Again, good luck. Edited by bprat22 - 05 Feb 2013 at 11:58am |
