Hello everyone. I've had a Marauder Level 1 from DS from years back. And it has served very well in those years. But now I'm hoping to upgrade it and I would appreciate any advice.

Here are the specs first,
Processor: AMD Bulldozer FX-4100 Zambezi (3.6GHz) (4 Core) (8 MB Cache) AM3+ Socket
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 (AMD 970 Chipset) (SATA 6 and USB 3.0) (Socket AM3+)
System Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance Series (High-Performance)
Power Supply: 600W Corsair GS
Video Card(s): 1x AMD Radeon HD 7750 1GB

I'm trying to keep this as a budget gaming build for 2016. I'm not sure if I should stick with the motherboard and chipset, and upgrade to a different processor or go Intel route.

And in terms of a graphics card, I'll probably be sticking with AMD again. So any suggestions will be helpful.

What are you looking to do/upgrade?

We need to know what you are trying to do so that we can advise you on what to get.

Its for gaming but what kinds of games and what res? are you having problems playing your games now? Or you just want to upgrade the system just in case.

Definitely want to upgrade the graphics card. Just needs to be able to play modern games at 1080p.

And I'm not sure if the cpu is worth just upgrading to another AMD FX lineup or go Intel route. I've currently been having issues with emulators stuttering due to the current cpu not having enough single core processing.

I go intel for the power, so I would recommend intel.

The new AMD gpus like the 480 is out, check them out, personally I would go nvidia 1060 but to each his own.

if you were to go with a simple gpu upgrade, like the 480X, you could see significant improvements in the ability to run modern day games like Far Cry Primal for example.  you will meet the minimum systems requirements with 8GB of system memory and that proc of yours, but there is concern with the proc and pipeline not really being up to the recommended level of performance.  it's possible to see significant cpu bottlenecking with the more demanding games.   you're due for a complete system upgrade, but it just depends on your budget and what you want to do.  try the graphics upgrade and see how it performs.  it's not like you can't use that new graphics card in a completely new build if things don't work out so well.

if you do plan to go with a complete new build, i would strongly urge you to consider going Intel.  unfortunately (and this from an old FX-57 over clocker) AMD is so far behind Intel (and for so long) that even their new/coming Zen line isn't going to beat Intel performance.  at least at some price points it makes sense to buy an AMD gpu, or at least it did with the previous gen.

Thanks for the good advice. I think I'll try and wait to find a RX 480 for when it comes more readily in stock.

I know it's probably best to switch to Intel, I was just hoping to ease out some more life out of the AM3+ chipset before having to do an entire rehaul.

The best thing to do is what db188 mentioned, get the gpu if it does not do the job in this rig then you keep the gpu and upgrade/ get a new rig with no gpu and add this gpu in.
