I'm considering replacing my GTS 250 GPU with a GTX 1060.The power supply is a Tech NPS 755w.http://www.digitalstorm.com/components-item.asp?prodid=238064
The old video card is six pin-the new one would be eight pin.I've read six to eight pin adapters are not recommended. It looks like this PSU supports 8 pins. Can I get any eight pin cable?I've never done anything with PSU's before and I certainly don't want to fry anything. Thanks

You have to use cables compatable to your supply. That said, the specs you referenced mentions the power supply has 2x 6+2 pin Pcie cables. The 6+2 pin means that 6 pins are ganged together with another 2 pin connector that can detach from the 6 pin. If you look closely you should see the 2 pin connector folded back and ty-wrapped into the harness, leaving the 6 pin exposed. It's done like that just to neaten things up. Just un tywrap the 2 pin and hook it to the 6 pin.

You should be good to go.

The specs mention it modular, meaning the cables aren't hard wired into the psu, but plug in .   You should have a set of cables that weren't used. You might have a 6 pin Pcie cable plugged in with the other 6+2 pin cables in the box it came in. Just use one of the 6+2 pin cables from the psu to the video card.

Thanks. This was a 2010 digital storm build so I'm going to assume I don't have that box anymore. Can you post a link to the correct cable on either Amazon or Newegg?

brother, you're due for a new psu.  don't know if i would trust a brand new gpu to that psu.

Agreed.

Option 2 is you can use a 6 -8 pin adapter. The reason it's not recommended however, is because if it's it's not a tight fit it will be a source of arcing, etc. Its another source of potential issues.   Plenty of people do it, but it's a chance, especially on an older psu.

You'd need to go to the manufacturer for parts.

Sigh...Now to research PSUs.Any recommendations?I guess I'd stay in the 750 range unless there was a compelling argument that was way overkill.

nah, you only need 400W to power that gpu, maybe 150W for the rest of the system, unless your heavily overclocking.

a good 600W 80+certified (silver or better) modular unit should do nicely. the Seasonic Prime 650 is a great unit if a little pricey.  also check out offerings from Corsair and EVGA.  all have 10-year warranties.
