One of my friends was asking about a sound visualizer where you could get various patterns to react on screen to the music tempo (or just sounds) emanating from your speakers. I'm not much help to him so I thought I ask you all...

Any recommendations?

Just so I understand correctly (we all know my slowness Big%20Smile) you're looking for software that reads the sound coming from the computer, not external sound (such as a instrument not connected to the PC, etc.)?

The only reason I ask is that there are some visualization programs that cater better to microphone input than they do to internal input, and vice versa.

Off the top of my head, if your friend isn't concerned with a visualizer responding to live instruments which are NOT connected to the PC hosting the visualizer (such as in a concert venue) I'd recommend VSXu to start with because it is free (GNU) and free is always a good place to start. Hahaha

Yes, exactly and thanks! I'll point him in that direction. (Not so slow there.)
