ASUS MG279Q Black 27" 144 Hz 4ms (GTG)WQHD Widescreen 2560X1440 LED IPS Panel, Adaptive-Sync (Free-Sync)

or the

ASUS ROG PG278Q Black 27" 1ms(GTG) WQHD Widescreen LED Backlight LCD G-SYNC 3D Monitor

They're both quite similar but the first one has IPS panel and 4 ms response and the second one has TN panel and 1ms response time.
ISO people's opinions. I'm shopping for 1440p monitors, having trouble deciding.

Hi funeralpyre88,

I am not a great monitor specialist but here are a few thoughts.

The ASUS MG279Q has Free-Sync that works with AMD GPU cards. I think if you have an NVIDIA GPU you should be looking at a G-SYNC monitor. This monitor only has a refresh rate of 35 to 90 when using Free-Sync. If you want 144 refresh rate then you have to drop out of Free-Sync.

If you have NVIDIA GPUs then the Asus ROG PG278Q would be a better choice because of G-Sync. Assuming you want to operate with G-Sync.

Some die hard gamers want TN monitors because of the response times. However, many people game on IPS monitors with no problem with response times. I think you get better picture quality with IPS and much better viewing angles. I have seen some of the new TN monitors and their picture quality is much better than I have seen in the past.

If I was buying a monitor today I am not sure what I would get. So probably not much help to you.

I think the answer is none of the above. In the price range you are looking at, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009742 the ACER XB270HU is probably one of the best gaming monitors money can buy, if you use NVIDEA chipset.

1440p
IPS panel
4ms Response
144hz
G-SYNC

To my knowledge, there is nothing out there currently to compete with those specs on an IPS panel.

My 2c.

The ACER is a good gaming monitor but the build quality is not the best. That is according to reviews I have read. I have not seen one to judge. ACER has always been a bargain basement brand. That doesn't mean that a lot of people don't use them.

ASUS ROG PG278Q has had NUMEROUS problems and ASUS has not been able to replace defective units. ASUS seems to be shying away from that monitor and pushing towards other newer gaming monitors. Bottom line is stay away from the ROG Swift and look elsewhere.

better in what way?  image quality and viewing angles?  the IPS panel is the winner. response time and display/input lag and signal processing?  the TN panel is the winner.  it all depends on what matters most to you and what tradeoffs you're willing to accept.  if you're a competitive first person shooter gamer you're probably going to go with the fastest TN panel you can get.  if you are a casual gamer and do a lot of rendering work you're probably going to want to go with an IPS (or similar tech) panel.

IPS/VA/etc. are becoming more mainstream and the prices are coming down, but they're still almost twice the cost of an equal quality TN panel.  something to consider.

a word on image quality.  while colors and viewing angles are better on an IPS, they do suffer somewhat from the phenomena known as "IPS glow" (light bleeding through darker images) and "washed out blacks" (poor contrast levels).  VA panels are much better at representing deeper blacks and better contrast at the cost of poorer colors and generally slower response times.

so, before recommending specific models i would ask that you qualify/quantify your specific needs/preferences.  is this a work station or gaming use?  a bit of both??  how much are you willing to spend???

having said all of that my recommendation for a terrific TN panel is the BenQ XL2730Z or the ROG Swift.  for IPS both the Acer and Asus panels you have listed are best buys.

in my own case, my rig is built around gaming primarily with some light productivity usage and netflix movies.  however, i am willing to trade off on blazing speed for better colors/image quality/viewing angles.  i'm not a competitive fps gamer (rpg are more my thing), so i don't need the fastest panels.  having said that i'll look for the fastest IPS or VA panel i can get.  i'm also interested in 1440p (4k just isn't there yet imo) for the time being, while looking forward to the future of 4k/5k gaming.  i'm actually looking at 34" ultra wide screen monitors with g-sync or adaptive sync due out in the fall.

you can go here https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/ or here http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews.htm for good reviews.

Thanks db188, I mainly play RPGs and watch a lot of movies. I don't really do the fast-paced stuff. I'm interested in what 1440p looks like, I don't mind spending a ton on computer parts.

I'm probably going to go with the Acer XB270HU. since people are saying IPS panel looks a whole lot better.

Oh, and the only thing I'm worried about is the bad quality reviews I saw for the Acer XB270HU. I dont want it to be shipped with dead pixels, spots on the screen, randomly not working for no reason, etc. Has anyone had this problem? Can I just ship it back for a free replacement if I don't like it? I've never ordered anything this expensive before.

Acer's build quality and feature set is getting a little better, but they're still below ASUS (for a direct competitor example.  however, things like dead/stuck pixels can (and do) occur on any LCD monitor.  the main concern with this issue is the manufacturer's, and/or, retailer's return/replacement policy (i.e. is there a 100% dead pixel-free guarantee with the purchase?).  if not, how many are required to return/exchange the monitor?   generally speaking the larger the screen and screen resolution the greater the number of defects it takes to be able to return the product.  also, the location of the defect and the proximity between two or more defects can be determinants.  last i heard HP has the most solid pc monitor (not laptop) policies. ASUS (although they have a zero bright pixel policy) and Acer pretty much follow ISO standards.

my personal experience with ASUS was that i had a single stuck bright pixel.  took a phone photo and sent it to their service/return department, got an rma very quickly and replaced the monitor easy-peasy.  so they do honor their zero tolerance stuck bright pixel policy.

as for that Acer Predator model, all i know is that TFT Central loved it!  they had some minor quibbles about it lacking some bells and whistles with the features, noted some middling build quality, limited connectivity (dp only), but as far as performance and image quality are concerned it's one of the best out there.

Definitely look at the warranty information on the acer monitor. Some companies require a certain number of dead or stuck pixels to appear before the warranty kicks in.

I can understand the hesitation about spending that much money on a monitor that has some bad reviews. I've seen the thing in action and it is truly a beautiful screen. G-sync makes a big difference in gaming on this monitor if you have a computer that can drive 60-100+ FPS at 1440p.

Were I able to afford a screen in this bracket, it's where I'd spend my money.

Hi funeralpyre88,

I have been using a product called "ScreenDr Professional". It works really well. I have tried just about everything and this works the best. It is alcohol and ammonia-free. I bought it for my tablet because of the finger prints. It worked so well that I use it on the big screen TV and my monitor.

I bought mine from Best Buy but it seems they are discontinuing it. You can get it at Amazon or Walmart. It comes with a microfiber cloth that you spray the product onto. Then wipe the screen with the wet side. You then have to dry the screen with the dry side of the cloth.

HI Tidgxor,

I have a 5oz can that will last a long, long, time. It takes very little sprayed onto the cloth. You store the cloth on the can with the lid on top. The lid has built in slits so the cloth will dry out. You can see that in the pictures.

Hi Snaike,

I have 5oz that I bought three years ago. I can't tell that any has been used. Enough left for another three years for sure. So my five ounces is costing me $2.50 a year. Well worth it to me.

Good Point. I am a bit lazy about cleaning my screens. It does such a good job I don't have to do it too often. It sits right next to my printer and ever so often I reach over and give the monitor a quick once over.
