Has anyone else missed having gadgets that show system performance in real time?

I particularly miss knowing the amount of RAM allocated, how much of my GPU RAM is in use when running various apps and knowing the signal strength of my wifi.

I read that MS removed them because they were a security risk, but my question is,

Are Gadgets really a security risk if it's ones you've had installed for years on a Win 7 computer which you downloaded from http://addgadgets.com/ and are well known like
All CPU Meter Version 4.7.3
Network Meter Version 9.6
GPU Meter Version 2.4

If they are, is there anything that is similar in Windows 8.1? Seems the Live Tiles are rather useless and cannot be placed on the desktop. I know the task manager has some of the above functionality, but not in an easy, small, at a glace location like a gadget.

Hiya,

Yes, the gadgets are a security risk. Windows removed them due to an exploit and replaced them with 'applications' in 8 and 8.1.

As far as Win 7 ( and earlier that use the same framework) Gadgets are disabled now and a KB article recommended that all users disable gadgets.

Have you tried the resource monitor? Not sure if it will do all you want but I have used it to find troubles and memory leaks.

CPUID has some nice monitors for CPU GPU temps etc and these can be pinned to start or have a shortcut on desktop.

you can download realtemps from http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/

Microsoft has a decent network monitor but it is more for IT monitoring.

You might have a look at http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-free-network-monitoring-tools/.   NOTE that this is almost 2 years old so make sure to get the latest downloads.

Hope this helps.

I was laying in bed looking up at the stars and wondered "where is my ceiling?"

Along with HWMonitor, you may want to look at Speccy, RealTemp and CPU-Z.

You could also use Rainmeter and have customized modules that fit whatever Rainmeter theme you'd like.  There are tons of Rainmeter themes available on DeviantArt.
