Gaming Workout—Healthier Gaming Habits

Look, it’s no secret that we gamers get a bad rap for being a little lazy. Who has time to work out when your guild is raiding at 6:00 PM every night and you don’t get home from work until 5:30 PM? Who really wants to miss out on epic loot just to be all sweaty and out of breath?

I think it’s time we make a pledge to ourselves to buck that trend and get into better shape. With beach season fast approaching, there isn’t a better time to start shedding some pounds. It’s not going to be easy, but there are some measures we can all take to be healthier—without giving up our precious gaming time.

Gaming Snacks

Be honest with me (and yourself), how often do you grab a bottle of Mountain Dew and a bag of Doritos before you sit down for your lengthy gaming sessions? It’s nothing to be ashamed of; it’s something many of us are guilty of doing. One of the first steps toward “healthy gaming” is to be more conscious of what we’re eating while we’re sitting in front of our computers and consoles.

First, try swapping out the soda for water. Wait, water?! Sure, it may be “boring,” but by simply dropping the sugary beverages, you’re already taking a huge step toward becoming healthier. If you miss the sweet taste of soda, try purchasing products such as Dasani Drops or Crystal Light to give your water a little more pizazz.

When snacking at your desk or on the couch, try to replace the potato chips with fruits and veggies. Seriously, a bag of baby carrots may not be your top choice, but the health benefits of subbing fresh fruits and veggies in for fried chips are endless. Next time you sit down for a round of Battlefield 4, try having some apple slices with peanut butter—you won’t even miss the cookies!

Start Moving

Sorry, guys and gals, but in order to truly be healthier, you’re going to have to do some physical activity. Try to find a workout routine that works for you. Some people like to run, others like to lift. Personally, I like to play tennis and hockey—I still get the same sense of competition as a video game, but I’m staying in shape in the process!

Another option is to take small workout breaks during gaming sessions. For example, maybe after beating a level or wrapping up a multiplayer match, drop and do 10 push-ups. Or, try using your chair to do some triceps dips. Just make sure your wheels are locked—otherwise, you’re going to be in some pain.

If physical activity isn’t your “thing,” there are some…interesting options for staying in shape while you game. For example, look into purchasing a standing desk; simply standing up while playing will burn additional calories (and work your leg muscles!). Additionally, look into purchasing a large exercise ball to sit on when gaming. In order to maintain balance on one of these balls, you have to engage all of the muscles in your core, which works out to be a pretty solid workout during a gaming session!

You can also look into fitness games, such as Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Just Dance, etc. A number of games have started incorporating movement, which is a great way to get in shape while still having fun with friends and family. Whatever you decide to do, some sort of physical activity (no matter how high or low the intensity) is going to be necessary to attain better overall fitness. And no, playing Madden doesn’t count!
