Intel Pentium G3258 Gaming Benchmarks

Intel Pentium G3258 Gaming Benchmarks

We've overclocked and benchmarked the new Pentium G3258's CPU compute performance, but many were asking how it would perform when used for gaming. Considering it is nearly half the cost of the popular i3 4330 chip, we decided to put the two processors head-to-head to see if the budget Pentium could match or beat the i3 when it came to gaming.

In order to really test the gaming performance, we opted to use the NVIDIA GTX 780 Ti as our graphics card due to the fact that we wanted to see if the Pentium or i3 would be bottlenecking in an extreme gaming computer setup.

Crysis 3

In Crysis 3, the results were pretty surprising. Even at stock, the new Pentium G3258 performed really well for being a budget chip. The i3 4330 maintained an average of 52 FPS which the Pentium actually matched once it was overclocked. Even the quad-core i5 4690K performed pretty much the same give or take 2 FPS.

Battlefield 4

In Battlefield 4, the Pentium did fall behind considering the game is heavily optimized for quad-core and multi-thread use. At stock, the Pentium G3258 maintained an average of 46 FPS and 68 FPS once overclocked. On the other hand, the four-thread i3 4330 was 7 FPS faster with an average of 75 FPS.

Conclusion

To sum it up, the new Pentium G3258 is definitely an amazing chip for gaming once you consider the price. At nearly half the cost, it performed equally as well or a little behind in our gaming benchmarks. There is one problem, however. In order to overclock the new Pentium chip you are going to need a Z97 series motherboard which can be quite costly as compared to the more budget friendly H and B series. In previous chipset revisions, you could actually overclock on some ASUS H series boards, but we haven't had a chance to test the new Pentiums on those boards ourselves.

What are your thoughts on the gaming performance of the Pentium G3258? Would you use one in a budget rig? Let us know in the comments below!
