Lifestyle: Late Night Gaming Energy Boost Tips

When we know that a gaming session is going to take us into what can only be called “all hours of the night,” many of us turn to energy drinks, coffee, and sugar-filled snacks to make it through the next raid, the next map, or just to find a good save point. Most of us are also well aware that this is far from the healthiest choice we can make, but since it’s so easy and convenient, we fire up our gaming PCs and do it anyways.

Unfortunately, years of this kind of quick energy behavior means that we’ve also built such a high tolerance to caffeine and sugar that the only way it can really help us anymore is if we were to pump it straight into our veins through an IV drip!

Of course, this type of energy boost quick fixes will lead us no where eventually, so instead, this article will provide you with simpler and healthier ways to get a good boost of energy for a long night of gaming. There are a couple ways to go about this, depending on whether the game night snuck up on you and you just need an instant boost, or if you have been planning on it all day and have time to get prepared.

Let’s begin.

High Energy Foods

Sugar is your enemy here. While it is possible to get a temporary boost from a candy bar or sugar-filled beverage, you’ll come crashing down soon after. The better option is to eat foods that are high in protein and complex carbohydrates – the combination of which means you will have more energy for a longer period of time. Some good choices are whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. Apples, pears, and oranges are good for a fast boost, and some whole grain breads and crackers with low-fat cheese and some peanut butter can help you in the long run.

Note that none of these foods rely on processed sugar or caffeine to give you that energy boost, so you won’t have to worry about getting past your tolerance to feel the boost in energy.

Planned Snacking

If you snack on healthy foods throughout the day, you can keep your metabolism revved up to maintain a high level of energy. Your snacks should be high in nutrients like fresh bananas, yogurt, almonds, cereal, and other foods that deliver proteins, fiber, antioxidants, and more.

B Vitamins

Now that you’re eating better food, how can you be sure that your body is converting it efficiently into useful energy? Consider upping your Vitamin B intake to enhance the process. Many of the eight different B vitamins help convert food into energy, and you can get them through lean beef, pork, poultry, and fish. They can also be harvested from bananas, nuts, and whole grains. And, of course, if that isn’t doable for you, then a multivitamin may be the way to go.

Take a Break

If you start feeling the fatigue of a long gaming session and your eyes are starting to dry out, it’s time to step away for a few minutes. Get up and move around. If you take a 10 minute walk, you’ll be able to return to the game with a renewed level of energy and increased ability to stay focused.

Drink Effectively

One of the biggest impacts on your level of energy is hydration. Unfortunately, energy drinks –despite their convenience – may only mask the symptoms of fatigue and dehydrate the body. So, you aren’t actually gaining energy, you just aren’t noticing how much your body needs it.

You need to drink a lot of water or low-sugar drinks throughout the day to make sure all those nutrients you’re eating make it where they need to go. This also helps cleanse the body of all the pollutants that contribute to fatigue. If you need some kind of tasty beverage on hand while you play, consider going green. All those green fruit drinks in the fruit and vegetable section of the market (not in the soda/energy drink section) are filled with green vegetable, grasses, herbs, low-sugar fruits, and more.
