Must-Have Accessories for Gaming Laptops

Must-Have Accessories for Gaming Laptops

While most PC gamers spend a majority of their time with their powerful gaming desktops, many like the option of taking their games with them wherever they go. For those who travel constantly, a powerful gaming laptop is the only way they can squeeze in any time to play their favorite games. To get the most out of your gaming laptop, though, you’ll want to pick up a few accessories. Below is a list of a few essentials for the gamer-on-the-go.

Mouse

Let’s be honest—we’ve all used a trackpad on a laptop. While they’re nice for browsing the web, listening to music, watching movies, etc., they really do not get the job done when it comes to gaming. Don’t believe me? Try playing Battlefield with a trackpad and report back to me with your kill-to-death ratio. Go ahead; I’m waiting.

Seriously, though, this one is an absolute no-brainer for the gamer-on-the-go. And it isn’t just for FPS players. We all know someone who plays World of Warcraft that’s a “clicker.” If you’re one of those people—it’s ok; we don’t judge here—and you want to game on a laptop, a trackpad isn’t going to cut it. A portable USB mouse is essential for gaming on-the-go. Trust me, you’ll be glad you picked one up.

Headphones/Headset

Headsets are a great accessory whether you’re playing your games on a desktop or a laptop. If you’re into multiplayer gaming, a solid headset is an absolute must. Seriously, try using the built in microphone on your laptop when you’re gaming online. Within five minutes, all of your friends will want to strangle you because they’ll be able to hear every key you click as you play. Do yourself and your friends a favor—get a headset.

Beyond communication, a headset is a must-have for audiophiles as well. The stock speakers on a laptop are serviceable, but for those who really want the best audio experience out of both their games and other forms of entertainment, a headset with 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound headphones will really allow you to get the most out of your laptop.

External Storage

While many laptops now have fairly large hard drives, they still don’t compare to some of the massive hard drives of their desktop siblings. If you want to carry around the ultimate portable gaming machine, consider picking up an external hard drive or USB flash drive to hold all of your non-essential, non-gaming files, such as photos, videos and music. You may as well put all of your school and work documents on it as well—who wants to waste valuable game space on that junk?

Additional Battery

If you’re gaming on-the-run and don’t have access to an outlet, an additional battery is an absolute lifesaver. Gaming laptops tend to be more powerful than standard laptops, which makes them sort of power hogs. Running graphically intense games like Battlefield, Crysis, The Witcher, etc., will drain battery power at a torrid rate. Having a spare battery (or two) will greatly extend the amount of time you’ll be able to game. It’s a great accessory for those “one more turn” Civilization V players, because, as we all know, “one more turn” really means “five more hours.”

Laptop Bag

How else are you going to lug around all of the stuff you just purchased? A nice, big laptop case with a shoulder strap will ensure you can carry around all of your gaming accessories wherever you go—without breaking your back or leaving a trail of cables in your wake. And don’t go cheap here. Protect your investment with a case with some serious padding!

These are just a few items that will help you get the most out of your gaming laptop. Other items, such as a controller for fast paced action games, an HDMI cable for displaying your games on a big screen, etc., are excellent peripherals for any gaming laptop.
