PC Gaming 101: Mouse Grip Styles

A gaming mouse is an essential accessory for gaming desktops and gaming laptops, but how do you go about choosing one? Mouse grip styles more than just finding the most comfortable resting position, the way you hold a mouse can have a big impact your game play. This guide will help you determine which type of mouse and its grip style will work best for you. In general, there are three basic grips that most gamers employ, depending on personal preferences, type of games played, and what mouse is used.

The Palm Grip

The palm grip is the most common style, probably because it is the most comfortable and natural for most people. Theres no real learning curve for a palm grip. You simply rest the base of your palm against the back of the mouse, the middle of the palm on top of the mouse, and lay the fingers flat out on the buttons. Its simple, direct, and causes almost no fatigue if you are playing for an extended period of time.

On the other hand, since you are using the entire finger to press the button, it can be a split second slower than other grip styles. And since you are using the entire palm to control the movement of your mouse, it might also lead to a slower reaction. Still, you will have plenty of precise control over movement.

The Claw Grip

With the claw grip, your hand is arched above the mouse instead of laying flat against it and only the fingertips are used to press the buttons. This method creates six points of contact on the mouse, which means you will still have great control over movement and can greatly increase your speed and reaction times because you are using a lighter touch.

Of course, anything that improves your performance isnt going to come quickly or easily. Switching to the claw grip will likely require some practice to get used to as its slightly an unnatural position and it can also lead to more fatigue if you are not accustomed to the grip. Still, it can be used with almost any style of mouse and many serious gamers are willing to put in the extra time to improve their overall competiveness.

The Fingertip Grip

Many gamers claim that the fingertip grip provides the most precision and speed because there is no added deadweight from resting your palm on the mouse. This method is similar to the claw grip, but you only use your fingertips to manipulate the mouse and click the buttons. Since your palm does not touch the mouse at all, everything must be controlled with the fingers. While this does lead to more control and faster reactions, it is also the most fatiguing and will require even more practice.

Which is Right for You?

You need to consider your grip style when you are buying a new gaming mouse. Most ergonomic mice were made with the palm grip in mind, so if you use the claw or fingertip grip, you might want to look for something a little different. The claw grip, however, can be used with almost any mouse, but they seem to work best with mice that have a high profile or high-lipped edges. When you are buying a new gaming mouse, just remember that performance is every bit as important as comfort, and that means finding the model that fits your style.
