Pushing the MA Boundary: Five of the Bloodiest, Goriest PC Games Ever

With Halloween right around the corner, now seems like an appropriate time to take a look at some of the most violent entries in video game history. You know, the kind of gory stuff that makes you feel a little bit sick while you’re playing. Below is a list of five of the most brutal, bloodiest, and goriest titles to ever make it to the PC. Warning: these games are not for the squeamish. You have been warned!

1. Manhunt:

This one was brutal. So much so, that it was (and still is) banned in many countries. As an inmate thrown onto a reality TV show (with freedom as your prize), you’re tasked with killing anyone who crosses your path. Sounds violent, but not too extreme, right? Wrong. Some of the weapons at your disposal are crowbars (think of the possibilities), knives, plastic bags, chainsaws, bats, etc. This is a game that actually rewards you for being over-the-top in your violent acts—the more ultra-violent the kill, the more points you’re awarded. This game turned a lot of heads when it was released, and still stands as one of the bloodiest, most violent games in video game history.

2. Dead Island:

It’s the obligatory zombie game to crack the Top 5 of this list. However, what sets Dead Island apart from the bulk of its zombie game brethren is that just about every encounter is one that can be classified as “ultra-violent.” A couple’s vacation to a beautiful island goes from bad to worse when their plane crashes. You play as the husband who must track down his wife while fending off hordes of deranged dead. If you’ve ever wanted to beat a zombie to death with a boat oar or a variety of makeshift weapons, here’s your chance. It’s the hyper-realism of this first-person game that makes it so (delightfully) disturbing.

3. Dead Space series:

Not only is this game brutally violent, but it’s also quite terrifying. This is the perfect game to play when trying to get into the Halloween spirit. There’s only one way to defeat the hideous monstrosities that infest the stranded space mining vessel you’re trapped aboard—total body dismemberment. You’ll use a variety of weapons to slice, hack, and saw off as many body parts of these creatures as possible. You’ll literally leave a trail of limbs and blood in your wake. But, if you want to see something truly gruesome, let one of the necromorphs kill you—I promise you will not be disappointed.

4. Gears of War series:

If you’ve played this game, you know exactly why it made this list—chainsaw kills. Anytime a gun comes equipped with a chainsaw in lieu of a bayonet, you know things are going to escalate quickly. There are few things in gaming that are more satisfying than running up behind someone and sawing their entire body in half while blood spews everywhere. Seriously, after hacking your way through unsuspecting opponents, this one makes you almost want to get up and wipe the blood off your screen.

5. Mortal Kombat series:

Okay, this is the one that likely started it for all of us. Back in the early ‘90s, the Mortal Kombat series was the undisputed king of video game violence. Seriously, anyone remember Sub-Zero’s decapitation fatality? The dude holds his opponent’s head up as a trophy, as the spine dangles below. That’s just twisted. Jax’s disarming fatality in Mortal Kombat II is another classic—he rips off both of his opponent’s arms, allowing blood to spew freely where they once were. When this game came out, it pushed the boundaries so far that you needed to enter a code just to enable the game’s blood effects.

Well, there you have it, a list of five of the bloodiest games ever created. We know there are more games out there that haven’t been mentioned, so please, feel free to share some of your most violent experiences in gaming in the comments section below!
