Rainy Day Games: What to Play When Mother Nature is at Her Worst

Rainy Day Games: What to Play When Mother Nature is at Her Worst

While we fellow gamers don’t typically need too many reasons to stay inside and play our favorite games all day, stormy weather at least gives us a legitimate excuse to do so. Rainy days offer us the perfect opportunity to catch up on those games we’ve had sitting in our backlog for months (or, in some cases years). Check out this list of the best games to play on rainy days!

Civilization V

Stuck inside all day, but don’t feel like playing Go Fish with grandma? No worries, Civilization V has you covered. The fifth entry in Sid Meier’s popular strategy series is the ultimate “one more turn” game. Building Rome took more than a day, which means you’re looking at a pretty serious time sink when you look to take your budding civilization from a group of wandering settlers to giant death robot-riding warmongers. The in-depth tech trees, well-designed combat system and compelling diplomacy system will keep you occupied for hours—or days. Just don’t forget to get up to eat or take a shower at some point.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

When the weather outside is frightful, completing that one game you’ve let sit for a few months can be quite delightful. Given Skyrim’s massive amount of side quests and areas to explore, it’s pretty easy to find yourself wandering off the game’s intended course. I find that this game tends to be on the backlog of many gamers. Being stuck inside due to unfavorable elements is the perfect opportunity to dedicate a day to getting back on track and finally finishing this game’s epic main quest. Don’t let the people of Tamriel down, Dovahkiin.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Some people like to get wrapped up in a blanket and get absorbed in a good book on rainy days. We need something a little more engaging than that, though, and nasty weather matches perfectly with eerie environmental games. The survival horror game Amnesia: The Dark Descent (and its sequel, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs) is about as creepy as it gets. Solving puzzles has never been so terrifying, and the inability to use weapons against the horrors that stalk you throughout the game really ups the feeling of total helplessness. So, turn out the lights, grab some headphones, a spare pair of underwear, and dive into this gloomy puzzler while the raindrops beat on your window.

Bioshock Infinite

So, maybe scary games aren’t really your thing—you don’t really have the time or desire to check for creatures under your bed before calling it a night. I can respect that. If you’re looking to get totally wrapped up in an imaginative environment without some of the scares, consider Bioshock Infinite for that rainy day. The steampunk-inspired city of Columbia is absolutely gorgeous—battling through the stunning scenery of the city will suck you in and make you forget about the deluge outside your door. You won’t be able to pull yourself away from this game’s engaging story and enchanting characters, which is a good thing, considering you’ll have no reason to do so.

StarCraft II

There’s just something about strategy games that makes them the perfect fit for rainy days. Why not sit down with one of the best? Much like playing through a few games of Civilization V, it’s difficult to put down StarCraft II once you’ve started. Unlike Civilization V, though, StarCraft II is an extremely fast-paced game, so if you’re looking for a strategy game that requires more active attention, you may want to consider StarCraft II. Plus, it has the added bonuses of an engaging single-player story and an excellent online multiplayer infrastructure for the competitive type.
