Review and Unboxing: ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II OC

The ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II OC follows the design trend of ASUS’ other DirectCU graphics cards with its sleek red and black design and high-performance cooler. Like its siblings, it’s designed to run at lower temps and is built using high-quality components that are made to last longer than compared to reference parts. We put the ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II OC to the test to see how it performed under real-life scenarios.

Architecture

Based on the kepler architecture, the ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II OC uses the same GK104 GPU that was used in the GTX 680 but features fewer shader clusters. The ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II OC also utilizes 2GB of GDDR5 RAM, same as the GTX 680. It features 1152 stream processors, a 1006MHz base clock and 96 texture units with a TDP of 170 watts.

Accessories

The ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II OC comes with ASUS' Driver DVD, a manual and a 8-pin PCI power adapter.

Top

On the top you can see the red and black desgin of the DirectCU II cooler as well as the two fans that are used to cool the card.

Bottom

The direct power plate on the bottom of the graphics card symbolizes the high quality components that are used to supply power to the GPU. These parts also reduce the overall temperature of the PCB.

Side

The ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II is powered by a single 8-pin power cable. If your power supply does not have a 8-pin cable available, ASUS includes a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter.

Temperature

When put under 100% load using Furmark, the ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II OC stuck around 74°C. Compared to the other graphics cards, the GTX 760 was on average 7°C cooler. It is important to note that due to the design of the DirectCU II cooler, the air is blown out both outside the case and inside as opposed to just the outside with reference cards. Depending on what chassis you use on your build, there could be some conflict regarding heat inside the case. However, as long as you have proper ventilation it should not be an issue.

Graphics Tests

Bioshock Infinite

We chose to use Bioshock Infinite to test the video card due to its magnificient visual qualities and the fact that it is one of the most popluar PC games out at the moment. This will allow us to get an accurate benchmark of how the card will perform in real life scenarios. We tested the ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II and the other graphics cards using the built-in benchmark tool under the 1920x1080 resolution with ultra graphics and DDOF enabled.

The ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II performed relatively well in the Bioshock benchmark. It maintained 65.9 frames per second, however, it did fall below 60 fps at certain moments. Compared to last generation's 660Ti, the ASUS GTX 760 showed a 6 frame per second increase.

Heaven 4.0

Widely used to test the capability of a GPU, Heaven benchmark is puts maximum stress on the GPU allowing you to check stability issues and real time performance of the card. It also generates real-time in game video that gives the user an accurate reading of the cards capability. The settings that we used to test the cards were as follows: 1920x1080p Full Screen, 4x Multisample Anti-Aliasing, and Normal Tessellation.

The ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II finished with an overall score of 2,933 and 45.4 fps. Same as in the last test, the GTX 760 had a gain of 6 frames per second compared to the GTX 660Ti.

3DMark 11

3DMark 11 offers extensive features and unbiased results. It is considered to be the best option out there when trying to find out the power of one’s computer. Each video card was subjected to four GPU graphics tests, a CPU Physics test and a combined GPU/CPU Physics test. Each of the cards was tested using the Extreme Benchmark option in 3DMark 11.

In the last of our graphics test, the ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II maintained its lead over the GTX 660Ti. It completed the extreme benchmark with a score of 2,933 while the GTX 660Ti finished with a score of 2,658.

Compute Tests

CLBenchmark 1.1.2

CLBenchmark is a high-performance compute benchmark tool that allows you to test the CL capabilities of a GPU. We tested the ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II using three tests that provided the best overall idea of how the card would perform in CL compute situations.

    Physics Fluid Simulation

The fluid simulation tests the physics capability of the graphics card. The test consists of 32,000 particles that are testing using Marching Cubes implementation.

    Vision Optical Flow - Hydrangea

The optical flow test calculates the motion of an image by comparing the input of multiple images. The motion vectors are depicted in a color space which is then overlaid the input images to track the motion.

    Raytrace

Raytracing is the method in which a path of waves or particles are tracked. Raytracing is widely used in the processing of special effects of movies and real-time rendering in video games.

LuxMark 2.0

LuxMark is a 100% OpenCL accelerated ray tracer program that tests the abilities of the GPU. The ability of harnessing the GPU's power allows artist to render images and movies much faster.

Conclusion

At its price point, the ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II is a serious competitor for its competition. It performs well as long as you are gaming on a 1080p monitor and does it while staying cool. Compared to the last generation, the improvements made have shown a slight but noticeable increase.
