Today in Tech - CRYENGINE coming to Linux, Intel launches 800 Gbps cable and Blu-ray successor

Today in Tech - CRYENGINE coming to Linux, Intel launches 800 Gbps cable and Blu-ray successor is here

Crytek bringing CRYENGINE to Linux

At Game Developers Conference 2014 (GDC), Crytek is getting ready to announce that CRYENGINE will be coming to the Linux platform. Ever since the release of Steam OS, many people have been questioning whether or not developers will be supporting the platform. With a big engine like CRYENGINE bringing native support, it should entice more developers to code their games for Linux as well.

Intel launches 800Gbps+ MXC cables for data transfer

Intel has unveiled its latest high-speed internet data transfer cable, MXC. With bandwidth needs growing everyday, we need cables with higher transfer speeds to help data centers move around terabytes of data. These new MXC cables are slated to hit speeds of up to 800Gbps and more depending on the implementation used by the data center or server farm. MXC is based on fiber and is split into either 8, 16 ,32 and 64 fibers. Each addition group of fiber strands allow faster transfer speeds (e.g: 16 fibers = 200 Gbps and 64 fibers = 800Gbps). There is no official release date but launch partners are giving an estimate of Q3 2014 for the first cables that are going to go on sale.

Blu-ray successor developed by Sony and Panasonic - 300GB discs

With 4K on the horizon, good old Blu-rays just aren't going to cut it. That is why Sony and Panasonic have teamed up to create Archival Disc to meet the demands of the future. Although the roadmap leads to 1TB discs, Archival Disc will first launch in a 300GB capacity and will only be write-once. For those of you who thought that optical media was dying and we would no longer need to buy CDs, think again.
