Top 5 Video Gaming Movies

Top 5 Video Gaming Movies

I know what you’re thinking as soon as you see this title: “Top five video game movies? Video game movies suck.” While you’re probably thinking of such box office bombs as the Super Mario Bros. movie, there are some films out there that are actually quite good. The movies listed here are not about specific video game franchises, but rather, include video games and gaming as a major plot point of the film. Below are our picks for five of the best films based on video games.

5. WarGames

A fantastic film that was actually somewhat frightening for its time, WarGames takes place during the Cold War and follows the story of a young hacker who accesses a United States supercomputer known as WOPR. Unknowingly, our young protagonist (played by a youthful Matthew Broderick), thinking he’s simply playing a video game, activates a nuclear war simulation that sends the world in panic, and almost starts World War III. The film then becomes a chess match against the computer in an attempt to prevent a catastrophic war. WarGames is a fun, entertaining, and thrilling ride that has a nice focus on gaming. Check this classic out immediately if you haven’t yet!

4. Wreck-It Ralph

Released in 2012, Disney’s animated Wreck-It Ralph is a classic gamer’s dream film. In a plot similar to Toy Story, once the lights go out, the characters within arcade machines come to life. The film’s protagonist, who is actually an antagonist in his video game, embarks on a quest to be seen as a “good guy” instead of a villain. The film features references to classic games such as Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pong, and many others. As with most Disney films, the voice acting is top-notch, featuring such stars as John C. Reilly, Jane Lynch, and Sarah Silverman. This one is an absolute must-see for classic gamers!

3. Grandma’s Boy

This one is a little bit different than the others on the list, but if you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and check it out. Grandma’s Boy is a hilarious flick about a stoner video game tester who, in the most ridiculous way possible, loses his money and can’t afford his rent. As a result, he’s forced to move in with his grandmother. This is probably the last Happy Madison film that was even remotely funny and it has some really great video game references for the hardcore fan. Check it out if you want a good laugh!

2. Tron

The second Disney film to make this list, Tron is an absolute classic film, and not just for gamers. The premise for Tron is simple -- and quite realistic: a computer programmer is transported into the glowing software world inside of a mainframe computer. Whilst inside of this world, he must interact with a number of computer programs to escape and return to the real world. The film has a very unique and iconic visual style and excellent synthesized music. This classic is a must-see for anyone interested in sci-fi, gaming, or computing.

1. The Wizard

Anyone surprised that this one made the list? This is the film that made all of us want the Nintendo Power Glove. Okay, maybe not so much, but it’s one of those things everyone remembers about this one. Plus, it had that kid from The Wonder Years break his brother out of a mental institution and run away to California so he can compete in a video game competition for a hefty cash prize. Pretty believable story, if you ask me. Anyone who calls themselves a gamer needs to see this film, if not for the references to classic ‘80s video games, then for the ridiculous plot. It’s a classic for a reason!
