Unboxing and Review: EVGA GTX 770 ACX

Falling between the Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 and the GTX 780, the GTX 770 offers a refined version of the GK104 GPU that was featured in the GTX 680 of last generation. The EVGA GTX 770 ACX version that we tested features EVGA's own Active Cooling Extreme non-reference cooler that offers better temperatures as opposed to the reference design. We put the EVGA GTX 770 to the test to see how it stacks up to previous generations and its current competition.

Architecture

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 feature the same Kepler GK104 GPU as the GTX 680 of the previous generation. The EVGA ACX variant that we tested comes with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and a 1111MHz base clock that can be boosted to 1163MHz with NVIDIA's GPU Boost 2.0.

Box

Accessories

The EVGA GTX 770 ACX comes with an EVGA case badge, drivers DVD and manual, two stickers, an 8-pin to 6-pin adapter and a 6-pin to molex power adapter and an EVGA poster.

Top

The top of the card features two high quality fans that EVGA claims are 700% more durable than other fans and are 20% more efficient due to their 25% lower weight. The ACX cooler also allows the GTX 770 to run 15% lower than compared to reference designs.

Bottom

On the bottom you can see the VRAM memory chips and the black PCB.

Side

Powering the EVGA GTX 770 ACX requires one 8-pin and one 6-pin PCI power cable. The heat fins visible on the side add to the sleek design of the card.

Temperature

The EVGA GTX 770 ACX ran in line with the ASUS DirectCU II cooler at 74° Celcius. The reference design cards tend to run around 80° - 81° Celcius.

Graphics Tests

Bioshock Infinite

We chose to use Bioshock Infinite to test the video card due to its magnificient visual qualities and the fact that it is one of the most popluar PC games out at the moment. This will allow us to get an accurate benchmark of how the card will perform in real life scenarios. We tested the EVGA GTX 770 ACX and the other graphics cards using the built-in benchmark tool under the 1920x1080 resolution with ultra graphics and DDOF enabled.

If gaming on a 1080p monitor, the EVGA GTX 770 ACX should be more than enough. It completed the benchmark with 80.1 fps which is more than enough to enjoy smooth gameplay. Unlike the GTX 760, it did not fall below more than 60fps for longer than a few seconds.

Heaven 4.0

Widely used to test the capability of a GPU, Heaven benchmark puts maximum stress on the GPU allowing you to check stability issues and real time performance of the card. It also generates real-time in game video that gives the user an accurate reading of the cards capability. The settings that we used to test the cards were as follows: 1920x1080p Full Screen, 4x Multisample Anti-Aliasing, and Normal Tessellation.

In the Heaven benchmark, the EVGA GTX 770 finished with 56.2 fps. Overall, the GTX 770 was 24% faster than the GTX 760 and 32% slower than the GTX 780.

3DMark 11

3DMark 11 offers extensive features and unbiased results. It is considered to be the best option out there when trying to find out the power of one’s computer. Each video card was subjected to four GPU graphics tests, a CPU Physics test and a combined GPU/CPU Physics test. Each of the cards was tested using the Extreme Benchmark option in 3DMark 11.

Finishing with a score of 3643, the GTX 770 was 24% faster than the GTX 760 and 22% slower than the GTX 780. If you compare it to the GTX 680 of the last generation, the performance was very similar.

Compute Tests

CLBenchmark 1.1.2

CLBenchmark is a high-performance compute benchmark tool that allows you to test the CL capabilities of a GPU.

    Raytrace

Raytracing is the method in which a path of waves or particles are tracked. Raytracing is widely used in the processing of special effects of movies and real-time rendering in video games.

AMD graphics cards have always known to perform better than Nvidia cards in OpenCL applications. However, if you compare the GTX 770 to the GTX 780, it was on average 39% slower but was 24% faster than the GTX 760.

LuxMark 2.0

LuxMark is a 100% OpenCL accelerated ray tracer program that tests the abilities of the GPU. The ability of harnessing the GPU's power allows artist to render images and movies much faster.

Again, the AMD 7990 performed overall 9x faster than the GTX 770, however, compared to the GTX 780, the EVGA GTX 770 performed about 50% slower. For compute applications, NVIDIA reccommends that you use either a Tesla or Quadro card.

Conclusion

In almost every test, the EVGA GTX 770 ACX was 24% faster than the GeForce GTX 760. Sitting in the middle between the GTX 760 and the GTX 780, the GTX 770 is the perfect card for those who are gaming on a 1080p monitor and don't mind having to turn down a few settings in order to achieve smooth gameplay. The EVGA GTX 770 ACX with its non-reference cool is an excellent choice for anyone looking to upgrade or build a new gaming computer.
