Unboxing and Review: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 PNY

Untitled Document

Using the same GK110 GPU as the GTX Titan, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 is one of the best performing graphics cards currently out on the market. With its sleek design and the horsepower to match, the GTX 780 is one beast of a graphics card. With the new GeForce Experience and TXAA, gamers can finally experience how games should truly be played.

Test Bench

Motherboard     MSI MPower Max Motherboard
CPU     Intel 4770k
Memory     8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz
Hard Drive     250GB Western Digital Velociraptor
Power Supply     Corsair GS 800 Power Supply
Drivers     Nvidia 326.80 Beta Drivers
Monitor     ASUS VG236H 120Hz 1080p

Architecture

The GK110 is NVIDIA's latest and greatest GPU featuring over 7 billion transistors. Compared to the GTX Titan that uses the same GK110 GPU, the GTX 780 variant features 2304 cuda cores instead of 2688 and 192 texture units instead of 224. Another big difference is the fact that the GTX Titan features 6 GB of GDDR5 memory while the GTX 780 uses 3 GB.

Specifications

Base Clock     863MHz
Boost Clock     902MHz
Memory     3GB GDDR5
Stream Processors     2304
ROPs     48
Texture Units     192
Transistors     7.1B
Manufacturing Process     28nm

Box

For our test, we used the PNY variant of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780.

Accessories

The PNY GTX 780 comes with a drivers DVD, a 8-pin to 6-pin adapter and a DVI to VGA adapter.

Top

The NVIDIA GTX 780 uses the same design and cooler as the more powerful GTX Titan. The clear window on the top of the card shows the vapor-chamber cooling system that is used to cool the GPU. It is important to note that the PNY version of the GTX 780 uses the reference design PCB and cooler.

Bottom

The GTX 780 uses the same black PCB as the GTX Titan.

Side

The side of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 features a green LED lit GEFORCE GTX logo that lights up when the computer is turned on. It isn’t too bright and overall adds a cool look to any computer. Powering the GTX 780 requires one 8-pin cable and one 6-pin cable.

Temperature

The GTX 780 is designed to run at 81° Celsius like the GTX 680 and 670. The GPU Boost technology will automatically adjust the boost clock so that they graphics card does not get too hot.

Graphics Tests

Bioshock Infinite

We chose to use Bioshock Infinite to test the video card due to its magnificient visual qualities and the fact that it is one of the most popluar PC games out at the moment. This will allow us to get an accurate benchmark of how the card will perform in real life scenarios. We tested the PNY GTX 780 and the other graphics cards using the built-in benchmark tool under the 1920x1080 resolution with ultra graphics and DDOF enabled.

In our test, the NVIDIA GTX 780 finished with an overall score of 94.5 frames per second. This makes it 18% faster than the GTX 770 and 27% faster than the GTX 680.

Heaven 4.0

Widely used to test the capability of a GPU, Heaven benchmark puts maximum stress on the GPU allowing you to check stability issues and real time performance of the card. It also generates real-time in game video that gives the user an accurate reading of the cards capability. The settings that we used to test the cards were as follows: 1920x1080p Full Screen, 4x Multisample Anti-Aliasing, and Normal Tessellation.

In our Heaven benchmark that heavily stresses the tessellation capabilities of a GPU, the GTX 780 finished with an average of 74.8 frames per second. This makes it 33% faster than the GTX 770 and 40% faster than the GTX 680.

3DMark 11

3DMark 11 offers extensive features and unbiased results. It is considered to be the best option out there when trying to find out the power of one’s computer. Each video card was subjected to four GPU graphics tests, a CPU Physics test and a combined GPU/CPU Physics test. Each of the cards was tested using the Extreme Benchmark option in 3DMark 11.

In our last graphics test, the NVIDIA GTX 780 achieved a score 4448 on the Extreme setting for 3DMark 11. It was 22% faster than the GTX 770 and 29% faster than the GTX 680.

Compute Tests

CLBenchmark 1.1.2

CLBenchmark is a high-performance compute benchmark tool that allows you to test the CL capabilities of a GPU.

    Physics Fluid Simulation

The fluid simulation tests the physics capability of the graphics card. The test consists of 32,000 particles that are testing using Marching Cubes implementation.

    Vision Optical Flow - Hydrangea

The optical flow test calculates the motion of an image by comparing the input of multiple images. The motion vectors are depicted in a color space which is then overlaid the input images to track the motion.

    Raytrace

Raytracing is the method in which a path of waves or particles are tracked. Raytracing is widely used in the processing of special effects of movies and real-time rendering in video games.

It has been widely known that AMD graphics cards perform much better than NVIDIA graphics cards in OpenCL situations. If you are going to be using programs that utilize OpenCL, NVIDIA reccoments that you use their Tesla or Quadro computing cards.

LuxMark 2.0

LuxMark is a 100% OpenCL accelerated ray tracer program that tests the abilities of the GPU. The ability of harnessing the GPU's power allows artist to render images and movies much faster.

Again, the GTX 780 performed much slower than the AMD Radeon 7990. As stated before, it is recommended that you use Tesla or Quadro cards for OpenCL applications.

Conclusion

Overall, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 is a beast of a card. It has more than enough power for your average user and will make you the envy of your friends. With its insane graphics performance, the GTX 780 is sure to last you for two or more generations. If you are looking for the best performance out there but don't want to break the bank, pick up a NVIDIA GTX 780.
