Unboxing: ASUS Maximus VI Extreme Overview

Untitled Document

ASUS' Maximus Extreme series of motherboards have always been designed to go to the extreme. With insight from the best overclockers in the world, ASUS has used its expertise to create one of the best motherboards for overclockers and high-end users. The new ASUS Maximus VI Extreme for Intel's LGA 1150 Haswell socket is the latest in their line-up to follow their philosophy.

Form Factor     ATX
CPU     Intel LGA1150
Chipset     Intel Z87
Memory     4x 240-pin DDR3 up to 32GB
Expansion Slots
  • 5x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16
  • 1 x PCIe 2.0 x4
  • 1 x mini-PCIe 2.0 x1 *2
  • SATA     10x SATA 6G
    USB     8x USB 3.0, 8x USB 2.0 ports
    Audio     Realtek ALC1150 8-Channel
    LAN     Intel I217V Gigabit Ethernet
    Wireless     Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac
    Bluetooth     Bluetooth V4.0

Included with the Maximus VI Extreme is 10x SATA 6G cables, USB Extension cable, manual and drivers, IO shield, SLI bridges and the 5.25" bay adapter for the OC tool.

Also included is the mPCIe Combo II with 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0 support. It offers the latest wifi and bluetooth standards and best of all, you don't need to sacrifice a PCI express slot.

Featuring a red and black color scheme, the ASUS Maximus VI Extreme offers a sleek look that looks great in almost any chassis. Unlike some of ASUS' other motherboards, the Maximus VI Extreme series does not feature their Thermal Armor.

The Republic of Gamers design with 4-way SLI and Crossfire support makes it easy to adjust graphics options. An onboard PCIe 3.0 x16 switch allows you to easily adjust settings to obtain latency-free graphics.

    CPU Socket

Surrounded by red and black, the LGA1150 socket lies at the top of the motherboard. The Maximus VI Extreme utilizes Extreme Engine Digi+ III components to deliver the best performance and relability. NexFET MOSFETs are able to handle 90% efficiency even under high currents. Blackwing chokes are able to stay cool even when put under 60amps of power and the 10K Black Metallic capacitors are able to last five times longer and offer much better endurance than regular components.

Next to the standard 8-pin power connection lies another 4-pin power connection. The extra power is needed when trying to achieve extreme overclocks.

    Back IO Ports

The back I/O port on the ASUS Maximus VI Extreme features:

  • 1 x PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port(s)
  • 1 x DisplayPort
  • 1 x HDMI
  • 1 x LAN (RJ45) port(s)
  • 6 x USB 3.0 (blue)
  • 2 x USB 2.0 (one port can be switched to ROG Connect)
  • 1 x Optical S/PDIF out
  • 6 x Audio jack(s)
  • 1 x Clear CMOS button(s)
  • 1 x ROG Connect On/ Off switch(es)
  • SATA

The ASUS Maximus VI Extreme series is capable of supporting up to ten 6G SATA devices. Six ports are controlled by Intel's Z87 chipset and four are controlled by the ASMedia ASM1061.

    UEFI Bios

Using the latest ROG UEFI Bios, you can easily adjust any settings that need to be made and fine tune overclocks. There is also a notes option inside the UEFI bios that allows you write down any information that might be needed regarding overclocks or other tuning.

Overtime, SSDs lose their performance. The ASUS Maximus IV Extreme features SSD Secure Erase which recovers lost performance due to overwrite action. By completely erasing all data on the drive, SSD Secure Erase can bring the solid state drive back to its factory speeds.

Also included is their CPU Level Up which makes it easy to overclock the CPU. By simply selecting one of the three presets, the motherboard will overclock your CPU to the desired setting while you sit back and relax.

    OC Panel

The overclocking command panel gives you easy access to real-time information regarding the system. The 2.6" display and buttons allow you to easily tweak the majority of settings. The panel can function as either an external piece or it can be installed in a 5.25" bay on the chassis.

With all the options available on the ASUS Maximus VI Extreme, this motherboard has everything anyone could possibly need. The UEFI bios, bundled software/hardware and high quality components make the Maximus VI Extreme a tempting option for someone who is looking for the best Z87 motherboard for their Haswell build.
