Lumos is an excellent case, and very popular here. Just a couple of things I think you should think hard on. CPUs have run way out in front of basic computing needs and very strong gaming perfromance. Bench marks show the 14600KF to be just 5% behind the 14700KF which has nothing to add to gaming and routine computer use.But 4% AHEAD of the top 12900K CPU of just 2 generations ago. IMHO, the 14600KF is all you will need for years to come and saves $179. Take $83 of that and invest in the Asus 790-P D5 mobo. It's not all about interface slots. Better motherboards are fairly well known for better heat management and other features that will generally mean a longer useful life.

Put the rest into an 850W DS power supply. More overhead is always better, and an 850 will give you more options to upgrade video and add other things for the life of this rig. The $$ trade-off is almost a complete wash, and you will have a stronger, more versatile build.

All the rest is just what I might recommend given your use. I love that cooler. That video card very strong for 1440p monitor(s). If you don't already have them.

The 1000W PSU is a good choice for the GPU and accessories. As for the storage, a dedicated boot drive can offer slight performance advantages, but the cost-saving approach with a single 1TB M.2 drive is reasonable.

If you're open to AMD, it's a solid choice, and the 4070 Super should handle gaming and streaming smoothly. However, if concerns about the reported performance drop exist, going with the 4060 might be a safer bet.

Ultimately, both configurations seem robust, and your decision may come down to personal preferences and any potential future-proofing considerations. Feel free to ask if you have more specific questions!

You will have no issues with a 4K monitor if you want to go get one. The Velox is very good for air cooling. I have a Noctua on mine cooling a 13900K and it keeps it quite under control. Right now the P-cores are running at 46.0C and E-cores at 43.0C. Articles I have read state that the 14900K runs very hot so if not the Noctua get the 3 fan AIO like you have.

As to fans, when I ordered mine you could get Corsair fans but...it changes with availability. I don't know about power requirements but you should be ok. I always order the biggest psu available.

Enjoy.

Edited by hoserator - 14 Feb 2024 at 2:33pm

    Author: Predatorus
Subject: New Velox Build
Posted: 14 Feb 2024 at 10:26am

This will be my third computer from Digital Storm, and beside a few minor issues the pc's have been rock solid. I tend to keep my computers for a long time and mostly game at 1440p, but I wouldn't mind considering 4k with the new rig.

A couple of questions:

1) I know the 14900K and the 4900 PSU are power hungry, will the 1000 PSU enough head room, or should I consider the 1500 PSU (I know this is over kill but there dŒsn't seem to be a mid-range option).

2) Cooling: On the first rig I went with the Noctua air cooler, but I had issues with it shipping and not being broken. I see that DS has brought it back, have they solved the damaged shipping issues? I prefer air cooled, but my second rig has the AIO cooler, if not do I need the Stage 2 AIO or Stage 3 (3 fans)?

3) Fans: When I originally purchased my second pc, I upgraded the fans to Corsair ML PRO Series for better airflow. I don't see those as an option, do I need better fans over the existing standard chassis fans?

Thanks for your help!

Budget:
5k+

Expectations:
I keep my computers for 5+ years.

Usage:
Gaming

Specifications:
Chassis Model: Digital Storm Velox
Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish
Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish
Processor: Intel Core i9-14900K (6 GHz Turbo) (32-Thread) (24-Core) 3.0 GHz (14th Gen)
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero (Wi-Fi) (Z790) (Up to 3x PCI-E) (No SLI) (DDR5)

System Memory: 32GB DDR5 6000MHz Kingston FURY Beast RGB

Power Supply: 1000W Digital Storm Performance Series (Semi-Modular) (80 Plus Gold)
Expansion Bay: - No Thanks
Optical Drive: - No Thanks
Storage Set 1: 1x SSD M.2 (4TB Kingston Fury Renegade) (NVM Express)

Storage Set 2: - No Thanks
Storage Set 3: - No Thanks
RAID Config: - No Thanks
RAID Card: - No Thanks
Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections)
Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce RTX 4090 24GB (VR Ready)
Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio
HPC Processor: - No Thanks
Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 3: Digital Storm Vortex Liquid CPU Cooler (Triple Fan) (Fully Sealed + No Maintenance)
HydroLux Tubing Style: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected
HydroLux Fluid Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected
Cable Management: Premium Cable Management (Strategically Routed & Organized for Airflow)
Chassis Fans: Standard Factory Chassis Fans
Internal Lighting: Remote Controlled Advanced LED Lighting System (Multiple RGB Color Modes)
Airflow Control: - No Thanks
Chassis Mods: - No Thanks
Noise Reduction: - No Thanks
LaserMark: - No Thanks
CPU Boost: Turbo Boost Technology
Boost Graphics Card(s): - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s)
Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system
Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 11 Home (64-Bit)
Recovery Tools: USB Drive - Windows Installation (Format and Clean Install)
Virus Protection: Windows Defender Antivirus (Built-in to Windows)
Office: - No Thanks
Mouse Pad: - No Thanks
Display: - No Thanks
Surge Shield: - No Thanks
Speakers: - No Thanks
Keyboard: - No Thanks
Mouse: - No Thanks
Branded Gear: - No Thanks
Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed
Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement)
