Hi guys - would appreciate some thoughts on this config / build. One thing i'm curious about is how important people think liquid cooling to GPU's are? I am thinking of getting Asus GTX 980 TI Strix SLI. I noticed default Aventum III cooling is just CPU only and wondering if upgrading to chip set + GPU is recommended. Finally do the Aventum III liquid cooling set ups require refilling? Thank you!

The Aventum case is overkill if you are only going to liquid cool the CPU. You should have the GPUs cooled as well. That will keep your gaming experience as smooth as possible because you won't have the GPUs throttling back after extended use. The GPUs are good for some overclocking as well.
You can't add a hot swap bay as there are no 5.25" bays on the case. But, you can hot swap drives in all of the internal SATA bays. Spec the HDD to be a WD Black Edition to make sure you get a quality hard drive...or you could move to a 1TB Samsung Evo SSD. thanks for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it. Odd that the default standard for all Aventums only include CPU liquid cooling.

if you're just gaming you don't need to go with X99 (i know i was torn between it and Z170). the base and boost clocks on the Skylake 4-core are higher+some "under the hood" architectural improvements that boost single core performance when needed. i was fully set to build my next system on X99 until i really dove into the possibilities of the Z170 chipset. unless you're planning on a 3 or 4 video card build, or heavy productivity work station+gaming, stick with a Z170/Skylake platform.
on Z170, you can drop down to 16GB of ram (4x4GB to populate all slots). again, if you're not using this machine as a work station doing heavy rendering/modeling work then no need for more ram. i'm having DS build almost the exact same config as "NoName" (except on Z170) suggested. One thing i'm trying to clarify with DS is if the AV3 comes with all of its fans as Corsair Air Series or whether you need to select the upgrade. all of the promotional material shows them with the Corsair fans installed. i'm going with acrylic water cooling (cpu+vid cards). i've also upgraded the os to WPro for more control over it. |

Hi tigerjckp,
Water cooling your GPUs are not hugely important unless you have a high-end system, and want to maximize your performance. Since the CPU is already water cooled, and you have two 980tis; I would personally just do it. Not to mention the system will look much better in my opinion. You also wont have to worry about the GPU fans dying, or squeaking after years of usage. I don't know what DigitalStorm recommends for how often you should refill your loop, but I generally drain the system once a year, and refill with new coolant. You could get away with once every two years if you're careful and watch for any signs of life in your coolant. As for people stating "X99 is OVERKILL for just gaming"; I would have to agree that the i7 5930K is a little overkill, but in the future you'll have no problem upgrading just your GPUs without the risk of being bottlenecked by your CPU. 980tis do give the i7 6700k a run for its money already. At stated above, 32GB of RAM is unneeded for gaming. 8GB is the standard for gaming, and 16GB is still a whole lot. If you ever plan on running multiple virtual machines, or rendering then stick with 32GB. Looks like a very solid build and I think it will do you well for a long time. |
