Hello, I am posting on this forum today because I am looking for a new computer I can use primarily for gaming. I am currently running on a cheap Asus laptop I got about 3 years ago, and I can't help but notice that when I play MMOs like WoW and Rift, my framerates are absolutely atrocious, especially in the larger cities and in BGs. I'm not looking to make my graphics look like the most beautiful thing ever, but I definitely want at least somewhat of an upgrade in my framerates and the ability to play higher graphically demanding games. Its becoming unbearable and making gameplay almost impossible. I'm not very computer savvy, so try to keep it simple. Here is a list of what I'm looking for:

Price:
This may be stretching it, but I'm looking for something in the price range of $1000-$1200. I have a feeling I won't be able to get anything worth my money for less than $1600, so if nobody can find anything that cheap, I may be able to settle for that high.

Graphics:
Not really that important to me, but I do want to be able to play games like WoW and Rift without having to watch my character practically teleport as I move. I'm also thinking of playing games on Steam (Magicka, Garry's Mod, TF2, CoD, etc.), so a graphics card that can support that would be nice.

Performance:
Outside of an upgrade to my framerates, I'm really not looking for that much as far as performance goes. Cooling is not an issue for me because I almost never play for more than four hours without a break. I do, however, want at least a step up from the most basic processor.

Misc.
I do not have a monitor or keyboard, because I have been on my laptop for a long time and have never used the time to purchase either. I was considering a Razer Anansi for my keyboard, but I think I'm going to purchase that elsewhere. I already have a mouse.  Memory isn't much of an issue, as I have a plethora of external memory devices.

If there is anything I forgot, please let me know. Like I said, I'm not very good with computers, so take it easy on me if I seem like I don't know anything.Wink
Thanks for your time!

If you're willing to spend the money, getting an i7 2600k and/or a GTX 560 will be worth it, but isn't completely mandatory. Those components will technically classify this build as a true starter gaming build, right now, it's sort of lurking in the top mainstream level I guess.

Y'know, I never really took resolution into account. Like I said, I do not have a monitor, so if you could recommend an economical but efficient one, that would be great. Thanks to everyone so far for the help. This altogether has actually been a fun experience. I hope I can decide very soon and purchase within the next two months.Big%20Smile

DST4ME, I have decided to go with your build. Thanks for all your help. Just a few more final questions: 1. Would it matter if I went for a different Chassis model? Just curious, the style is nice, but anything to save a couple bucks is great for me (I'm sure you may have guessed by now that I'm a cheapass tightwadHahaha). 2. I have decided to go for the i7 2600k processor, which did manage to add a few bucks. Is there anything else I don't really HAVE to have, like maybe some sort of unnecessary add-on (perhaps the special, but according to you, these may be necessary)? 3. What's the whole deal on Liquid Cooling? I've seen a few controversial posts on other forums saying that its a bad thing. Is this true?

Btw, I did happen to find a keyboard, and I already have a mouse, so I took that off of the new build. Please check it out and tell me if there's anything I can change to lower the price without skimping out on the quality and repost your edit on this thread. I can't tell you how much help you guys have been, particularly you DST. Thanks a bunch!

1. I pic my parts so that the config spends the least and gets the most, in short, the 922 offers a lot for its price, others don't, for the airflow I would stick with 922.

2. As mentioned above, my configs are geared toward price/performance, so there is nothing really in there I would cut corners on.

3. There is nothing wrong with LC when done right, what did they say was rung with the LC in these post that you have read?

Your build looks great, nothing I would change.

Our pleasure and good luck

Ok, thanks. That build looks perfect for me now. I'll try to purchase in the next couple months. I'll let you know when I do with a report on the performance of the system. I'm really hoping this is a perfect build for both the price and quality. Maybe in the next couple years I'll learn more about computers and try my own buildSmile. Again, I can't thank you enough for the help you've given me. I hope you have a great day and and good luck on future endeavors. See ya in a couple months!

Oh boy..... I know its been a long time since anyone has been on this topic, so I'm going to post something so it doesn't get removed or something >.< . Unfortunately, my Xbox 360 got the RRoD, so I had to shell out like $300 for a new one. This is definitely going to set me back for a little while. I don't really have the kind of money to throw away $300 like that, but since I already have a computer, I guess I'll just have to be a little more patient. I'll try to come back in a month or two. Please just bear with me. I am going to try my hardest to purchase this within the next three months. Again, I would like to thank all of you for all of your time and effort in assisting me with the new computer. I apologize for any unnecessary time wasted with this post. I hope I can buy this machine very soon.

Thanks guys!

Hey guys, its me again. I have two (hopefully) final questions:
1. Are Asus motherboards reliable? I'm currently running on an Asus motherboard, and I have noticed my computer is quite laggy at times. It may be Kaspersky AntiVirus, but whatever.

2. What antivirus is best for gaming? I can pay, money is not an issue. I want an antivirus that uses little resources but has a high detection rate.

Thanks!

For an anti-virus, I use Avast! free version, with Comodo's free firewall. I used to have McAffee...never had any issues with that minus it slowing my ancient PC down, but I switched due to high costs. I've had Avast and Comodo for around 4 months now with no virus issues in the slightest, while my girlfriend has AVG on her laptop, and has had two destructive Trojans sneak their way in.

Use ESET Smart Security, it has a 30 day full free trial, try it first then buy a license after 30 days

I love it and highly recommend it.

Make your settings like this

Its very light and very fast, its been around for a long time and been known as one of the best/fastest out there.

Dang, DST, your post provoked two final questions. I'm starting to actually annoy myself here Oops
1. Whats the difference between ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32? Just curious.

2: Does ESET have a good database of known infectious websites and downloads? I'd hate to spend $1700 only to have my hard drive wiped by a Trojan. I had an old HP that picked up just one, and it fried the entire system.

Of course, I still want something with a good detection rate and low resource usage. It's actually pretty ironic, I was considering picking up ESET the other day. Kaspersky is killing my computer.

Thanks again!

1. Smart security is node32 + firewall.

2. Well this is not that simple, you see:

a. Our biggest defence against infection is our commonsense, that is like 90% of the game, our av/as/firewall can't protect us if they warn us about something and we allow it to install or enter or etc, so as long as we use commonsense, a good av/as/firewall we are almost secure.

for av and firewall eset smart security is great.

for anti spyware, there are only 2 great ones on teh market right now, webroot's spysweeper or malwarebytes, both you need to get the paid version so that you have realtime protection otherwise the free version does not have that.

that is what I use and advise others to use, tho in all fairness I don't have spysweeper running the background, instead I use it to just scan one in a while to make sure things are clean.

I find SS faster then MB in scanning, otherwise they are both great anti spywares, next to non false positives and good detection.

to answer your question does nod32 keep a good database of known infections? yes they are one of the top performers every year, download and websites are where our commonsense needs to protect us, its impossible to keep up with all bs websites and downloads that comeout daily, nobody can do that, it takes time to detect them, for downloads you need scan them with av/as before opening them, this is where most people fail and endup getting something, or ignore the av's warning, having said that, eset has stopped me from downloading some bad stuff a few times.

Yeah, thanks for those reassuring words. You see, my entire life, I have only been afraid of two things, and one of those things is computer viruses. That may seem a little silly, but the fact that someone can steal my information and money at will almost makes me want to completely stop using computers. People can and will steal from you given the opportunity. Back about 2 months ago, I was using Webroot, when I noticed my speed was below average. So, I got it checked out by taking it to Best Buy (probably not my smartest move, because I can question the validity of their results). Half a day later, they told me I had 4 infections on my computer. Ever since then I've been paranoid whenever I hop on my computer. I got Kaspersky Anti-Virus, but it's a total resource hog. That is why I asked for a good antivirus. Thanks for the answers.

when you say webroot, are you talking about their anti virus or ss?

I was talking about their antivirus. I had some package from them entitled "Webroot Anti-Virus with SpySweeper", so I guess the fault kinda belongs to both of them. I scanned my computer multiple times, but nothing came up. Also, it allowed the infections in, so I don't really know what to tell you, the fault is on the entire package.

SS is very good but its for spyware it won't catch viruses, that is why we need a good AV and AS.

the weebroot AV is not great at all, and I don't recommend it for AV, for AS however SS is great.

The oc on the gpu is very low here, you wont' see nothing from it, if you want to see a difference you need to oc it yourself high enough.

use MSI Afterburner, its easy to oc gpu, if you like we can show you what to do.

Ask as many questions as you like, we are here for that reason and love to get questions.

Hey guys!

It's been a couple of months since I've logged into my DigitalStorm forum account, and since then, I've been able to scrape together much more cash that I had expected. That's the thing about performing odd jobs: you never know how much you'll make! Actually, over the past 5 months, since I started planning this whole damn thing, I've obtained over (9000!) $2500, which is a huge deal for someone as impatient as me. Because of this, I have decided to treat myself to what I believe is a more efficient build. Of course, since I'm very green on the subject of computers, I would like to know what you guys think of it. Is the cooling not going to be powerful enough, not enough voltage in the power supply, etc. The build can be found here.

Thanks so much for the help. I intend on purchasing my computer on Saturday, October the 15th. If something is wrong with this new build, or you have suggestions, please feel free to tell me. I'm still learning. Love

They no longer offer some of those parts, the 922, and the noctua u12 is no longer offered here.

590 is a bad idea and gets beat by sli 570.

try this instead:

Here you go Ticket# 605513 --- $2,571 (To see this build click here)

also checkout ode 3

All right, looks good. Sorry, I had just updated from previous builds, so I had never noticed the chassis or fan wasn't sold here anymore. My bad.

I just checked out that ODE 3 you were talking about, its essentially the exact same machine as this one but for a couple hundred bucks cheaper. The main thing I'm looking for, though, is what YOU recommend, because I've never owned, or even operated, for that matter, a high end computer before. I could buy the build you were mentioning and get completely screwed, but it could also happen vice versa. Just tell me what you think is the best option, because I trust you more than I trust myself, bro.

Thanks for your time

Well, tomorrow is the 15th, the day has finally come! I'm so excited I can barely contain it. But, before I make my decision, I want your opinion: Should I get the ODE 3 or the build you recommended? Really, its like 6 eggs one way, half a dozen the other to me, but I really trust you more than myself, and messing this up would make me so angry. Now that I actually know what the ODE 3 is, I feel so dumb. It is no doubt a great machine, and I honestly like it a little more than the custom one. But, like I said, your recommendation comes before my (pathetic) instincts. I look forward to hearing from you before I make my purchase!

Well the difference is that in the future if you want to upgrade the sli to future cards and they have needs of a 580 sli the 800w can't do it, but my config can do any dual sli/cf you like.

ode 3 has ssd, with my config you need to add it yourself, if we add the ssd the price will go higher, however my build has better parts then teh ode, for example the psu has a 7 year warranty and its a better psu.

Aight, sounds good to me. In all honesty, I was expecting the custom build to be better. Thanks for all the help bro. I'll probably order it tomorrow morning around maybe 10:00. Love

Hey guys, sorry it took so long to respond, but I completely forgot about the post.  I received my computer in mid-November, and the thing runs SOOO well!  I haven't had any issues with the hardware or cooling, and it runs incredibly fast.  I've been playing BF3 on ultra and get 60 FPS with little impact on the performance of my rig. SWTOR runs nicely as well.  I actually have Avast! free antivirus on it right now, but I'm working on getting something else with a higher detection rate, as I am very paranoid with keyloggers and the like.  I'd attach some pics, but I don't have any at the moment.  Thanks for everything, I'll try to keep active on the community forums as best I can!
