Budget:
<= $3500

Expectations:
Rig needs to be able to play any modern game at ultra or very high settings at least 60+ FPS on a 34in curved display 3440 x 1440 (WQHD). My current monitor is capped at 60hz but in a year or two I may purchase a monitor with a higher refresh rate. This is my current monitor: LG 34UC98-W 34-Inch 21:9 Curved UltraWide QHD IPS Monitor with Thunderbolt

From what I hear, I'm confident that the 1080ti is more than capable for this, and probably overkill for a 60hz screen. I'm fine with overkill as I plan for this rig to last me about 4-5 years without upgrades.

Usage:
Any modern game like Battlefield 1, Crysis, GTA5, and I want very fast turns processed in Civ6, and I like city builder games like Skylines. Again, this rig is way overkill for most strategy games, but I'm future-proofing here.

I will also be using this for web development (I do this professionally, but I will be mostly using my Macbook Pro for this), photoshop, and occasional 3d modeling / rendering in Blender.

---

Below is what I have configured. I've also added RGB fans and nice premium cabling because I want this thing to look awesssssome.

What do we think of this setup? Anything I should change or swap out? My BIGGEST concern is that I would like to specify which 1080ti I get.... is there a particular 1080ti that is better? Would I be able to request the 1080ti ROG STRIX? ROG-STRIX-GTX1080TI-O11G-GAMING

Also, is the cooling I selected good enough for at least a conservative overclock? Would I be better of selecting a different water cooler? Would Air cooling have been better? I don't really care if it's louder.

Thanks!

Ok lets go over some info,

Getting a 1080ti today will have no bearing on a better monitor in two years since by that time plus monitor upgrade will force a gpu upgrade i assume to the ti version of that time.

For os drive go with 960 pro.

Get a better storage drive

Cooler is h115i

Drop oc, 8700k has great turbo, otherwise we can help you oc very easy to do, unless you want to endup with high settings.

Drop oc from gpu it is not needed, try not to put parts under unnecessary stress.

Get win10 pro

Remember part warranty is one year

Hey thanks for the response!

For OS drive, I currently went with the 960 evo. From what I've been reading, upgrading to the pro version is almost pointless for the money... performance gains basically undetectable, besides the warranty being doubled on the pro, but that might not matter since I'm buying through DS.

For storage drive, I'm only using that to install my non-primary games and don't mind it being on the slower side. I'm not putting valuable data on there either so it's no biggie to me if/when it fails.

Normally, I wouldn't go for the OCs... I've only selected those for both the CPU and GPU because DS is offering stage 1 OCs for free atm. I am a little cautious about over-stressing the GPU as you said... I want it to last me.

Win 10 pro offers absolutely nothing extra that I would need vs the home version.

Pretty much the same build as I just bought from DS.

Can't go wrong with those specs, and oc should be fine imo.

Granted 8700k's auto turbo is 4.7, and 5/5.1 isn't much more as that is what people get around with these chips as far as I know.

S4m, check your vcore you are not going to like it.

One core at 4.7 is different from all cores at 4.7.

@keen, not only performance is better but 960 oro is stacked differently for better quality, don't skip on os drive and always get a solid one, the 960 pro is worth every dime, don't believe the less educated reviewers online. Your DS warranty is only 1 year part, not sure how DS makes a difference here, after the first year, you are on your own.

Hdd is up to you but for me if I have to pay once for this one tgen it goes bad, now I lose data and time, plus now i have to buy another hdd, for me i rather skip the headache and buying 2 drives and instead buy 1 that lasts, but to each his own.

The oc on cpu here is not great, the turbo boost on 8700k is very good for games, like i said uf you want a goid oc let us help you, DS goes with auto vcore which is not the best /least stress.

Just because things are free it does not make them the best choice.

Win10 pro supports virtualization and other minor stuff that come in handy, but of course that is up to you.

Our recommendations here on the forums are based on facts, they are to help you get the best bang for your buck with the highest quality possible so it lasts as long as possible.

Thanks for the help!

I will reconsider the 960 pro ssd. I was reading more into it... and yes, it does have slightly better performance... mainly in terms of endurance while writing to the drive like a madman... more reliable and won't give up so quick. ...I have been lucky so far and never had a drive fail on me... ssd or mechanical lol.

Do you guys think I can specifically ask DS for the ASUS 1080ti ROG STRIX... seems to be the better 1080ti... what do you guys think? I think it costs more though...

You never had a hdd/ssd fail on you? You have to be very lucky or rarely use your pc, i have had so many hdds fail on me it is not even funny.

You can request asus card but our advise is to go evga, i can match any card with a little oc, at the end they all are either base or factory oc.

Thanks all.

I've submitted my order and went with the 960 pro instead of the evo. I decided to not let them do any OCs either.

Let them do the turbo boost, it is just a click but you get tested with the boost.

Welcome to the family! You're going to need some patience while DS works through all the holiday sale orders. Mine was placed on 11/28, and coming 1/2.

At this end of the sale, it may not take that long, but believe me, it is sooo worth the wait!

Thanks all!

Thanks for the heads up about the wait. I’m really looking forward to this beast! I’ll finally be able to play real games again!

I’ve been just using my 2014 MacBook Pro to play a few games here and there but I’m getting back into PC games again. I figure if I’m going to spend over 3k on a computer again I’m going to do it for a joyride desktop. When my MacBook Pro finally dies I’m just going to get the lowest spec MacBook and use that for mobility and OSX experience. I don’t really need much mobile computing power.
