Hi all, I'm thinking of getting my 2nd DS computer this summer after the Ampere cards are out. My current one is 7 years old and still works fine tbh, but it's getting up there in years.

I have a big Noctua cooler now, but DS no longer offers heavy air coolers. Frankly I don't trust liquid cooling because the people I know that have them had their pumps fail within 3 years (not DS computers, but known cooler brands). I expect to get another 7 years out of a new machine and do not want to have to replace the CPU cooler in that time. I have never done it and don't trust myself to DIY so it would be a big problem.

Anyway I'm going to go with a 8700k, no overclock. Monitor 1440 144 hz for gaming. Would the Air stage I cooler work for that? Or are the chips really designed to need liquid cooling or a massive air cooler from the factory? Or maybe water pumps have become more reliable in the last 5 years, but I kind of doubt it?

Thanks.

For stock 8700k with no oc, the air cooler offered will work.    The all in one coolers like Corsair h115 are better and more reliable than 5 years ago but still can fail unlike air coolers.   I also like air coolers, my Corsair A70, a step below Noctua, is still cranking after 6 years of overclocking.   They just work forever.

Good like and post your config if you want to share.

Cool, I was hoping it would be viable. I know these cpus run hotter, but also they don't throttle until around 100 C anyway now so apparently that's ok?

Anyway, here is what I'm looking at so far, not including a future graphics card (probably a 2080 or whatever they'll be called). I hope the miners stay away from our stuff though.

Nice build.

Yeah, the miners have been wrecking the gaming market.

Hey, portbaron, welcome (back?) to the forums! I, too had a DS rig over seven years old with a Noctua until January. If I could do it over, I would have gone with the air cooler. The fans on my H115i are loud at idle, but I could barely hear the Noctua. Without an OC, your temps will be fine.

That's a very good looking build. I've been leaning hard toward the MSI boards, especially that one, since finding Asus customer service continues to be a lost cause. Plus the boards get good reviews.

Applaud your patience to wait for the next gen GPUs. I'm happy at 1080p, so I didn't need a lot. The upgrade from the 900 series to the 1000 series was phenomenal, so I can't wait to see what's next!
