The Budget: $2,500, but willing to spend the $2,608 for the below configuration
Expectations: I want to be able to play games on maxed settings such as Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, Battlefield 3 and so on. I may use an external monitor to make life easier while gaming. Usage: 90% Gaming, the rest will be for research, web browsing, photos and some light video editing. Game List: Team Fortress 2 Battlefield 3 Guild Wars 2 Diablo 3 Brink Saints Row the Third ARMA 2 / Day Z Left 4 Dead 2 Borderlands 2 Starcraft 2 Crysis 3 Ok, so below is the build I have come up with. Everything is pretty close to being maxed for what my budget can handle. As stated above I play quite a few games and want to be able to run those at the highest quality possible. I know that some might need to be toned back just because of the heat, but I do have a very good laptop cooler as well. I am just tired of having to run games as low to medium settings to play fluidly. Also, my current system is a Studio 16 XPS if someone could give a possible comparison between the laptops. Chassis Model: Digital Storm x15E Laptop (Model: 9150) Display: 15.6 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Glossy Surface) LED-Backlit Display Processor: Intel Core i7 3820QM (2.7 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.7Ghz) (Quad Core) (8MB Cache) Thermal Compound: Premium IC Diamond CPU and GPU Thermal Compound (Reduces Thermal & Laptop Noise) Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Primary Hard Drive: 750GB Hybrid 7200RPM with 8GB SSD (SATA 3Gb/s) Secondary Hard Drive: - Not Available Optical Drive: DVD/CD 8x Multi-Drive (Writes and Reads DVDs, CDs) Wireless Card: Bigfoot Networks Killer Wireless-N 1103 (Reduces Latency for Online Gaming) Video Card(s): NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M 4GB with NVIDIA Optimus Technology Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Warranty Plan: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty |

You could save an easy $300 by switching to the 7970M. A comparison between the 680 and 7970 can be found here:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-GeForce-GTX-680M-vs-Radeon-HD-7970M.77110.0.html As you can see, there is no difference between the two that could justify a $50 price difference, let alone a $313 one. Also, depending on what the weight and gaming quality mean to you, you could probably switch to the x17 for a little more spacious screen. Check out this build: 708416. How much bigger/heavier is the 17" build you posted? I have had a 17" laptop in the past and it felt huge, bulky and not very mobile.

The x17 is ~1.77lbs heavier and ~.27 inches thicker. I doubt that you'd notice the extra height, but the weight might be an issue (Considering that the x15E is already 6.83lbs, I don't know how much different 8.60lbs would feel to you). It all depends on your preferences.

Thanks for the review link read through it and think I will drop the 680 for the 7970 and save about $315.

also, for gaming wise, 8gb ram and the 3610 processor will be fine. I have the x17 with 16gb ram, 3820 i7, and 7970m. While I love it, for just gaming, I could of saved. If you plan to do more with it like video editing etc, then the ram is no biggie, but id stick with the 3610 0r 3720.
x17 is worth it, and I recommend it for the fact that you can use 2 hard drives. Im using the intel 520 120gb from DS, I also picked up a 240gb for just games and im more then set on space. Stepping down on a few things will save you a good amount of money, and be able to play the games at max or really close to. |
