Just can't seem to win. I decided to take advantage of a program from school where I could get Windows 7 on the cheap. Unfortunately due to continuing troubles with my computer and my dvd player. I can't use a boot dvd, so I read online you could do it using an external HDD.
Nifty, I can install W7 and back up all my files all at once. So i DL the W7 Iso, extract it to my hdd like the guide said. I reboot the computer, select the USB drive from the boot menu and I am greeted by a message like this: Try (hd0'0):NTFS5:No GRLDR Try (hd0'1):FAT32:No GRLDR Try (hd0'2):NTFS5:No GRLDR Try (hd0'3):INVAL OR NULl Can not find GRLDR Press space bar to hold screen, any other key to load previous MBR... I currently am using Win Xp and trying to upgrade to W7 professional 64bit |

Have you tried it with a USB flash drive/jump drive? I downloaded XP on a netbook this way. Actually Microsoft looks like they make it easier for windows 7 (XP was a p.i.t.a).http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool
Only caveat is you need to borrow someones pc and win 7 disk and you need a 4gig flash drive. Edited by AndydViking - 15 Jun 2010 at 1:11am |

That way works very well. I have about 3 of those thumb drives around. We use them to load up WIndows 7 on Netbooks. I would suggest giving that a try and see how it goes, it is slower than from the DVD but not by much.

I did some searching around and the trouble seems to come from that I am going from 32 to 64 bit OS. Per Windows own support pages:
"When creating a bootable USB device, I am getting an error about bootsect To make the USB device bootable, you need to run a tool named bootsect.exe. In some cases, this tool needs to be downloaded from your Microsoft Store account. This may happen if you're trying to create a 64-bit bootable USB device from a 32-bit version of Windows. To download bootsect: Login to your Microsoft Store account to view your purchase history Look for your Windows 7 purchase. Next to Windows 7, there is an "Additional download options" drop-down menu. In the drop-down menu, select "32-bit ISO." Right-click the link, and then save the bootsect.exe file to the location where you installed the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (e.g. C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apps\Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool). Once the file has been saved, go back to the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool to create your bootable USB device." Which doesn't do me a whole lot of good as I purchased it from digital river and pull it from Microsoft. Don't suppose a kind soul on the forums could email it or put it on a DL site? :( |

Awesome! I was determined to find that file somewhere as it looked like a lot of people had the same issue as yourself. I knew someone had to have it lol. Glad it woked out for you.
