I know this has been posted before, but what is it again? I couldn't find it. I'm talking about the program where you can set fan speed for certain temps, etc.
Thanks! |

Speedfan is probably the best one out there. http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php keep in mind for it to work your fans need to be hooked up to the motherboard and it doesn't work with all motherboards.

Im assuming you mean GPU fan speed. If so, use MSI Afterburner

I was talking about both really. Is it a bad idea to make such settings on the non-gpu fans? For someone who is just getting started on exploring my computer. :P

Unless your case fans are annoyingly loud, I'd just leave them be. Airflow in the case will effect the temps of all your components.

never hook fans to the mobo header..you are asking for more trouble than sitting on the corner calling all the ladys that walk buy fat.

Some case fans draw in more current than others, so if you connect a fan to the header that draws in more current than the header's rating, it will burnout making the header useless.
Either connect via PSU running at max speed or via fan controller. Edited by AmbientChong11 - 10 Oct 2010 at 6:50pm |

but isn't the fan header useless already if you don't use it? haha and thanks for the information but it can't burn out the whole mobo right?

Yes, it's useless but if you want to control the fan speed like you would on a video card, the fan needs to be connected to the MB via headers or else the speed would be locked if using the PSU 4 pin molex to power the fan or buy a fan controller.
It wouldn't make the MB useless. It would be insane for a $10 fan to fry your $300 MB. You're welcome.

mobos are very under powered, that is why we have evolved the high performance motherboards with (2) 8 pin power connectors, and 2 ,molex connectors added to the 24 pin connector. tons of stability issues due to low voltage, voltage sag, and we all know that watts = volts x amps, so voltage drops, amp must increase to maintain the same power, and then boom.. lol putting 5 high speed fans on an already starving board is a bad idea.

makes sense, i just dont do it becuase i have no interest in a fan running at less than 100% still waiting to see if anyone can tell me if there is a simple in line fan controller that will hook between the power cable and the fan itself and allow analog fan speed control, like a stereo knob sort of |

Hey Justin, can multiple fans be hooked up to the rheostat providing the max. output fan wattage does not exceed 25 watts?

i was actually thinking.. what if you took a controller like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811998808&cm_re=fan_controller-_-11-998-808-_-Product
and tore it apart, just used the knobs individually?

just a random thought here.
I have the Storm Sniper case from CM. There are 4 case fans which are controlled by a dial on the top of the case. Is it a bad thing to turn it down and up often? I usually have it at the low speed for browsing, email, etc; During Video editing or gaming I usually turn it up all the way. I'm assuming this is all going through the mobo because I didn't buy anything to control it. So is the general consensus that you shouldn't be messing around with mobo controlled fan dials? |

the dial is controlling the fan speeds. just keep an eye on your temps, but I would imagine your temps will be fine, as long as the fans are still turning.
Bender, just get this, http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/mctmi.html
then you can set them with software. you indecisive bot you.
