Budget:

I am willing to pay up to $4000. But if I don't have to pay $4000 for a setup that doesn't lack in performance and saves a buck or two is obviously optimal.

Expectations:

I am looking for a PC that will play Battlefield 3 and other high end graphics games on the market to their fullest potential.

Usage:

I plan on using this as my gaming computer solely, as i already have a laptop for general purpose activities.

Special Needs:

A relatively quiet machine that won't overheat and won't need considerable upgrades for several years is what I am looking.

Saved Ticket #: 603727

Specifications:

My main concern with this setup that I have built is that I have heard about SSD's causing problems for people while gaming. As I am an avid gamer looking to come back to PC's, I wish to avoid problems like what I have heard. Please let me know what specs here you would consider changing or modifying so that my gaming experience will be maximized. I appreciate any and all advice offered and will take all opinions with an open mind as I wish to have no surprises when I go to play my first game on this rig.

Well, I could recommend something but I'm sure DST would do better.  I just recently built one with that same intention for under 4k.  Here's my suggestion but its a different direction that where you were heading.

The front fan on this case is LED red but I believe you can have them change it out to Blue for an additional charge if Blue is the color you are set on.

Win Pro will allow you to utilize more ram down the road and doesn't cost too much more.

Changed the second drive to allow more storage.  With updates and expansions those SSD's will fill up quicker that you think.

Not sure what to think of the noise suppression kit but I added it since you seem to want it.

SLI 570 better than 1 580. Either will work for BF3 though I believe.

DST will be on later I'm sure and build something totally different and better than what you and I are looking at.

Don't forget to select your free T-shirt!

Discoern's build is ok but the noise package is pointless, it makes your airflow less and will not have anything to do with most of your noise that comes from the gpu's fan.

other then that don't get your monitor here, Most important thing about a monitor is its panel, right now there are 2 major ones, TN and IPS, IPS has superior picture quality/clarity.

all the ones here on DS are TN.

here are some good monitors:

Dell UltraSharp U2410

Dell UltraSharp U2410M

Dell UltraSharp u2312

all ssds are not the same and the good ones will give you better performance in games, not hurt it.

Hi Foodman98,

The case you have chosen is very small. I would not choose it unless you just have to. Below is a system that is more powerful for less money. It has a better MoBo, power supply, drive setup and OC.

Hi DST4ME,

My bad, I didn't look at Discoern's build. For some reason I didn't see those big, black numbers to his configuration. An old guy mistake.

you guys are really helpful and I appreciate the assistance. i did some more tinkering and shopping around comparing. i built this rig for even cheaper and i am happy with the price and parts however i looked into some alienware customs and could build one with a bigger harddrive and RAM for about 300 more than this one. do you guys have any past experience with alienware or know about their quality or reliability? I have never owned one and only recently found out about this site, just curious what options I have out on the market. Don't get me wrong though I have been thoroughly impressed with DS and the level of customization available. Not to mention that you guys have been very helpful. thank you

foodman98 I looked at lot of builders before I came here, there are many other builders that give you this build for cheaper but there is always a catch, first things always go wrong, when they do you want a company that will take care of you and not one you have to argue with.

second cheaper builder use used parts and don't have the same workmanship.

alienware , dell, hp, these companies are a joke and their pc is never gonna be as powerful as these configs, to you it may look like they are but they are not, for example, is alienware 's ram 1333MHz or 1600MHz, what brand is their psu/mobo? what cpu cooling are they using? how much are they ocing the cpu?

Now with all due respect, your second config looks as if you didn't read or listen to anything me Discoern and frank said.

and because of that you have a config that we would never recommend to anybody. Nor is your config upgradeable.

frank and Discoern's build will beat yours in power, airflow/room, and upgradeability, not to mention better faster parts. I will give you an example, you think with the 510 ssd you have chosen a faster ssd than the 320 but you have not, cause most of our use is in 4k speeds, and in 4k speeds the 320 eats up the 510 for snack.

let me try and put it this way, you have a 4000 budget, which we don't even need to come close to, and instead of getting the good parts, you are building a hot mess, why would you go that monitor?

foodman98,

Where ever you buy your computer take the time to visit the Better Business Bureau and check out any company you are interested in.

Alienware is sold by Dell and I quote from the BBB about Dell's history of problems:

"11483 complaints closed with BBB in last 3 years | 2356 closed in last 12 months."

Now here it is for DS and I quote again:

"23 complaints closed with BBB in last 3 years | 4 closed in last 12 months."

The people who are trying to help you on this forum are all DS computer owners. We have dealt with DS and know that you are getting a superior product. I really urge you to reread this thread before you make some mistakes with your purchase.

In your last build you have the case, PSU, MoBo, video card, Windows verson and OC wrong. Your system will play games but expect to be disappointed if you decide to buy a second video card or expand the memory.

With what I see you doing I now think you would be better off with the ODE-3 than what you are building. At $2300 with SLI 570's it would out perform what you are doing.

Frank

i took a better look at the rigs you guys recommended and once I took away the monitor keyboard mouse promo and the noise cancellation package, i can live with a 2950 price tag. i appreciate the honesty too, seeing as how i wasn't really taking to your advice there, most people would have said screw it let him build a lousy rig. i was wondering about the three monitors from dell that you suggested earlier DST, as i see what frank and you have to say about dell, are these monitors still something worth purchasing? I still have several months before i am home from asghanistan, and im sure prices will fluctuate between now and then, but lately it's been seeming more like a buyers market for PC users. Here's hoping anyway. do you have any recommendations for keyboards and mouses? nothing fancy like crazy gaming ones, just reliable?

also the reason i didn't change the tower was because of the specific customization tab i was under or something that only had that particular type available, wasn't trying to be picky or bias. more room, better airflow, and upgrade room are welcome

Tho the dell pcs are not great those ips monitors are different, I have them, know people that have them, lot of people here have them, so based on all of that I highly recommend them.

I'm not a keyboard mouse expert so for that I suggest you go to the hardware section of the forum and ask there, but there are already plenty of threads on keyboard mouse , search the hardware section and the general section and you will see them.

Hi Foodman98,

I was getting worried that our comments had run you off. Glad to see you back. The important thing is you get a computer that you are happy with. We are just providing information and suggestions that will help you do that. You are at the right place to buy a great gaming computer.

I have owned four Dell computers and the last one lasted me for six years. I won't ever buy another one. The DS experience is just so much better with service and performance.

I don't have a Dell monitor. I have a NEC IPS with the same screen that the Dell monitors use. The IPS screens are really the way to go. They are more money than the TN screens but worth it to me.

Like DST4ME, I don't know much about key boards or mouses. I have always had good service from Microsoft and Logitech. My present keyboard has buttons for the Internet, Email Phone and a few more that I never used. They looked cool when I got the keyboard but I can't remember the last time I used them.

foodman98, that sounds good. I know you won't be sorry going with DS. By the end of the year you may have some new video cards and CPU's to choose from. DS sells a bunch of computers to military personnel. They have even shipped them over seas to duty locations.

Hey foodman98,

First off, thank you for doing what you do in the military. I'm sure everyone here greatly appreciates it. Regarding recommendations for a keyboards and mouse, it depends.

Personally, I would invest in a mechanical keyboard. The great thing about these keyboards are its sturdiness, longevity, and great feedback. By feedback I mean that each keypress gives a clicky and/or tactile response; depending on the type of key switches a keyboard has, you can control what kind of response you get with each keypress.

Here's a link that has GREAT information on mechanical keyboards:

http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=START+HERE+--+The+Geekhack+Mechanical+Keyboard+Guide+-+Includes+Glossary+and+Links

In terms of mice, I personally think that it depends on how much you use the mouse in games. Specifically, do you need lots of buttons on the mouse or are 2 buttons and mouse wheel sufficient for you? How do you hold your mouse? Razer has a decent guide on different ways a person holds his/her mouse. Depending on how you hold it, certain mice might be uncomfortable. Do you want a wired or wireless mouse. Personally, I prefer a wired mouse because it's more reliable. I don't have to worry about batteries running out or risk there being a break in my wireless connection.

Hope this helps you out. I'm not an expert but I have done research and know a decent amount of information on the subject.
