Topic: Config help for sim racing and FPS PC Posted: 06 Jun 2012 at 5:20am |
I am building a computer primarily for sim racing (iracing, rfactor, etc.) and FPS (Call of Duty, BF3, etc.) and wondered if you think this is a good setup for a budget under $2k. I will be running this in surround mode with 3 monitors (Asus VH236H).

Hi gleek48.....Welcome to the forums.
That is a real good build for the money. The gtx 670 card is a great card. I'm not into multi-monitor displays but this would do it. The only problem would be playing BF3 across multi monitor. It can be done with your 1920x1080 displays but settings would have be be dropped alot. It would still look good just not on high or even medium, but not sure about all the games you mentioned.. Here's a config for $100 over budget that will give you sli, 2x gtx 670 for better graphics, especially across the monitors. For a single monitor this would max out games like BF3 . I dropped HDD and oveclocking and cooler down a stage to stay close to your budget. Hi gleek48,
I didn't even have to look at your build to tell that bprat22's build was better than yours. Just go with his build and you will be good to go. For me personally I would rather have a single monitor of any size over a three monitor setup. You just get better gaming. This is especially true with a larger single monitor. You are buying three inexpensive TN monitors. For less money you can get a 24" Dell IPS monitor and have a better gaming experience in my opinion. Frank Edited by FrankW - 06 Jun 2012 at 12:13pm |

Do the racing sims work well with SLI?
I heard they do not. |

I really don't know about racing sims. The good thing about sli is that it is easy to disable with a few clicks of the mouse in Nvidia Control Panel . When you play BF 3 for example just re- enable.

Thanks guys.
Do you guys recommend overclocking the GTX 670 GPU(s)? Also, for a level II cpu overclock, is an air cooler acceptable? |

If by 670 oc'ing you mean the Video Boost option, then we usually leave it alone. Not much benefit and just added stress to a already great card. For stage 2 oc'ing with cpu, I would up the cooler to the stage 2 Noctua D14 or Vortex 240mm radiator. The A50 would be pushing it. The D14 will handle it great and be very reliable.
Hope this helps

@bprat22 or @Frank,
Guys often you speak of multi-monitor gaming and what cards can do what resolution etc. How do you know that information - I'd like to become properly versed. "It can be done with your 1920x1080 displays but settings would have be be dropped alot. It would still look good just not on high or even medium, but not sure about all the games you mentioned.." - Xii |

Hi xii....I really don't know multi-monitor at all and usually say i don't. There's isn't alot of testing I've seem showing multi-monitor results. But, what I try to do is take what is needed for a single monitor and triple it for 3 monitor displays.
For example, in this case, a single 670 will play at 1920x1080 on high settings with BF3 for example, but on two or three monitors the settings would have to be dropped alot. With the sli ,2x 670 it would, by benches we check on, max out gaming on a single monitor but would have to drop to high on two screens and something lower for three. The quote above means the single 670 will play on three monitors, just not on high settings. That's probably clear as mud but hope it helps. Here's a site where you can plug in different card combos to see with different games. This one is single 670 vs sli 680 just to see the results. Edited by bprat22 - 07 Jun 2012 at 8:41am |

Hi xii,
It would be wonderful if I had the money to have a bench setup with all the games, computers, different graphic cards and CPUs but I don't. So I have to rely on other peoples test results like AnandTech. When deciding what you need to drive multiple monitors it is not about the number of monitors but the total resolution you are considering. That is why it is so important to know what resolution the monitors are and how many will be used for gaming. For instance, three 1920 monitors has a total resolution of 5760. So you need Gpus that will drive a resolution of 5760. I then research the test results at various sites and see what Gpu will be best for that resolution and with the games someone wants to play. With a little history and a lot of reading you become familiar with what is needed for specific builds. Frank |
