Topic: Help, wanting a new gaming rig! Posted: 15 Sep 2015 at 1:48pm |
So at the moment I have a pretty nice gaming rig but I upgrade about every three years or so. I am wanting to build one now that will last me beyond that but at this moment be a monster of a gaming pc. I have two monitors mounted vertically for streaming, the main monitor is 27" Acer XB270HU IPS Panel 1440P @144hz. I have a budget of around $4k pushing to $5k if needed. I currently have an i7 4770k, 2x 980 GTX cards in SLI, Z87 Sabertooth Mobo, 256gb SSD and 1 TB HDD. So I want this new computer to be a pretty significant upgrade over that. If it's fully water cooled that's cool too but I want the most bang for my buck, I want to be able to max out about any game @1440 P while streaming my game to twitch.tv without losing much performance. Please help me with configuring a build or giving me some advice. Thanks

i'm going to be as honest and straight forward with my thoughts/comments as i can, hopefully i don't offend anyone.
first the questions to clarify your needs: is the system you have not getting it done for you performance-wise? are you not capable of driving most games at 1440p under max settings on your current monitors? what do you mean by "upgrading" if you are getting the performance you need for your current setup? do you plan on moving to 4/5K? i ask these questions because to me it looks like you have what you need to game at 1440p very nicely, so why get a new system just to get a new system. these questions become especially apparent if you plan on moving to a Skylake-based system. that would be a very lateral move costing way more than it's worth in terms of an "upgrade". now, if you're talking about moving up to an X99-based system because you want more productivity performance, or if you notice that your system is sometimes struggling with streaming, having multiple programs/windows open, and gaming at the same time, then i can see that as an upgrade worth paying for. you can build an entry level X99 system with an I7-5820K processor; 2x GTX 980ti Strix vid cards; 16GB of Corsair LPX 2800Hz ram; a 1TB Samsung 850 Pro ssd; 2x 2TB Western Digital Black (in raid 1 for redundancy) hdd; Corsair 1000W 80-plus Platinum rated psu; Corsair H100i GT 280mm CLC/AIO or (even cheaper) Noctua NH-D15 air cooler for the cpu; all in a Velox case for right around $5k. optionally, you might want to bump upthe system ram capacity to 32GB for a couple hundred more. Hi Dedshank,
I agree with db188 that your present system is up to the task. No need to buy now unless you just want a new system. Here is a build that would do the job you are looking for. You could also move up to 4K if you wanted to. I personal think that 1440 is the place to be right now. I included a 400Gb NVM SSD that is a bit costly. You could get a Pro Samsung and save some money. The NVM is the latest technology. Since I didn't LC the GPUs I used the Velox case that will keep your GPUs nice and cool. If it was me I would add another year or two to your warranty. I didn't add any lighting and the upgraded fans do not have diodes. I will give you another build with the GPUs liquid cooled. Hi Hi dedshank,
In the X99 build, I meant to use 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB (ASUS Strix Edition). Frank |

The Velox case is nice. In the end I went with the slade case because it was a little less expensive and I didn't care about having a window on the side. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB (ASUS Strix Edition) is definitely the card to get right now as far as I can tell. I put 1 in my build with a ps big enough to add another down the road.

Thanks for the replies everyone, my current build is nice yes but it definitely struggles when multi tasking especially when streaming. I am leaning towards building it myself even though I have never tried that it just seems more bang for the buck. I can't do the fancy liquid cooling really though.

First step: try a video capture software that uses Intel Quicksync on the iGPU to unload some of the major encoding work from your other hardware. You can use something like Predator in MSI Afterburner or Open Broadcast Software for this. Here is a quick video on how to set up OBS to use Quicksync.
If that doesn't work, you may want to consider getting a dedicated hardware solution like: Avermedia, Hauppauge, or Elgato. If those don't work (and I doubt they won't), then consider upgrading your computer. |

Yes I considered that but I also wasn't going for it for the silent options. I can take the side panel off and add 1 big or 2 smaller fans and that should help dump the heat out of the case.

I agree with db188 that the Strix GPU is not a good choice for the Slade case. Probably all of the noise baffles will have to be removed from over the fans. The Slade case was built for Quiet and sacrifices thermals to do it.

Well I went with the case because it was less expensive then the Velox so it allowed me to put that money somewhere else. I didn't go with it because it was a silent case.

one other thing @Dedshark
you can save money building it yourself; however, for not a whole lot more you get a DS warranty on top of the manufacturer's warranty for the main parts, as well as tech support. DS seems to stand behind their systems and generally have a very customer-friendly eye to support (which varies from individual component manufacturer to the next). while building your own rig can be very rewarding from a personal accomplishment standpoint (if you love to tinker), you can avoid all of the inevitable troubleshooting pain (at least from the initial build leaving the station). some people find value in going with DS over the few hundred bucks (depending on the system) you might save from ordering from pcpartpicker or another e-tailer. finding the right boutique builder is a bit of a gamble. i've had my own bad experience (with a competitor), which is why i've lurked around here for about 2 years. i wanted to get a sense of how DS operates. i've had my own criticisms and doubts from time to time with DS on some instances. but the one thing i've seen from them is a willingness to accept critical feedback from the community and improve on their business practices. another plus are the 3 truly custom case lines: Bolt, Velox and Aventum series of cases only available from DS. db I definitely like those points, I can build myself one with an i7 5930, Liquid cooler, 32gb 2666 Kingston HyperX Fury RAM, X99x Fatality MOBO, 2x GTX 980 Ti Zotac AMP! Extreme cards, 3TB HDD, m.2 SSD PCI-E 512 Gig, Corsaid 900 D Case, 1300W PSU and windows 10 for $3600. I'm not sure I could get close to that with DS even though I would prefer to have it professionally done.

It's just a ton of money, I wanna make sure I get a really nice rig that can smash benchmarks and games, can edit video, multi task and everything. If I got with DS I wanna make sure it's a great build and I don't have to deal with gettin stuck on hold forever etc...

The build looks good.
I would change the HDD to the Western Digital Black for another $19 for a more reliable and longer warranty drive. Drop the stage 2 Noise Reduction. No place to put sound deadening material. I would use the Corsair H100i or the H110i instead of the DS Vortex. The Corsairs have a 5 year warranty last I checked and the DS Vortex might, not sure, only have the DS warranty( 2 years default) with the rig itself and no manufacturer's warranty. You could ask them to make sure. |

You can save money personally built, Samsung Galaxy s6 edge case but not much more you get a guarantee of DS under manufacturer's warranty on top of the main parts, and technical support. Samsung Galaxy note 5 case Some people think the value of DS in a few hundred dollars (depending on the system), you can save the order pcpartpicker or other electronic retailers.
