The reason being, say I want to upgrade my pc in the future which may involve a new motherboard and other components, does this render my OS invalid?

I believe it is OEM, but call or email DS to make sure.

Past OS's did allow paying for just the new key, but not sure about Windows 10. Windows 10 has created confusion, all MS fault.
Can't say for sure. I would guess you could during activation or over the phone when they see a new mobo. You might be surprised the old key works even with OEM. There are cases of it. |

I theorize it's retail. The key will be on the sticker on the back (or side) of your PC. I was curious about it as well since Windows 10 comes on Flash Drives. When I received my Bolt 3 I was surprised to see a Windows 10 DISC in my binder.

Good to know. Saw your edit... The key on the case doesn't necessarily mean retail. Edited by bprat22 - 01 Jul 2016 at 10:08am |

They are oem if I'm not mistaken, but if you have your key and the windows install file you can move it, you just have to ms you installed a new mobo on the old pc lol

Microsoft is improving the way licenses are handled in Windows 10 with the Anniversary Update. See http://www.cnet.com/how-to/fixing-windows-10-activation-problems-after-a-hardware-upgrade/.

That is just for people with MS account, if you don't have an MS account you can't make use of that feature.

I honestly haven't personally met anyone not using an MS account, but yes, it does require it.

I don't know any that do most are on google
I do have an ms accont myself but I would never ever never link it to my os, as if its not easy enough for hackers to connect the dots now I'm gonna connect it for them. Edited by DST4ME - 01 Jul 2016 at 11:26am |
