I've had my ODE Level 4 for about 5 years now, and I absolutely love that it's been rock solid with very little maintenance. My only complaint is that the case is a bit too big and heavy.
- I'm looking to get a Bolt X replacement and my budget is $3k-$4k. - I'd like to be able to play Battlefront 2 at max settings. I also do heavy photo editing. Would like the same level of longevity in a Bolt X rig that my ODE has had. 2 questions: 1) i7-8700k vs. i7-7800X vs. i9? 2) What kind of maintenance, if any, will I need to perform for the HydroLux liquid cooling? It looks absolutely fantastic, but if regular maintenance is required than I'd rather just forego this option. Thanks!! |

Photo editing has use for cores games need only 4.
More cores = more power(multi thread/tasking) but less speed Less cores = less power higher speeds So if you want to lean toward editing we go 8 or more cores, if you want to lean towards gaming we go 4 cores. Middle would be 6 core, each side gives a little. 8700k is top cpu for that line 1. 78xx X is 6 core cpu of x299, this line goes to 16 cores. So which direction would you like to go? 2. Any lc system can require some work, you can even get a closed aio, but if fan or pump or leak happens you will need to work on it, fan is least likely. For a good oc cooling you need lc here they no longer offer noctua for air. If you want 4k and max settings you may need sli and bolt doesn't do sli, at least not in configurator Edited by DST4ME - 24 Oct 2017 at 8:09am |

Thanks DST4Me!
These are great suggestions. I'm leaning towards the 6-core i7-8700k which according to reports, out-performs the i7-7800X. Do you know if the cooling liquid that DS uses needs to be flushed and changed regularly? |

Regardless of what the liquid manufacturer says, its always best to flush the system once a year to keep optimal performance.
For the 8700k the h115i should do well, its aio so unless something breaks you don't mess with it. What res are you going to be gaming at? Edited by DST4ME - 24 Oct 2017 at 10:44am |

I think a single slot solution will be fine for me, moreso once the Nvidia Volta based cards arrive. |

How is this? 1762962
You can drop the 1080 ti to a 1080 or 1070 if you want but for 4k 1080 ti would do better |

I’m just going to mention what I’ve said in other posts....the Bolt is not that much smaller than other choices, only a couple of inches in length and thinner for example. The Bolt is actually taller than the Vanquish. Just mentioning this because the Bolt is a real nice case but is harder to work on and has restrictions on psu and number of video cards and has limited airflow. It’s thinner design is the main attraction I would think.
Not saying the Bolt is a bad choice, it isn’t. |

Yeah the Bolt has gotten quite a bit more fat over the years.

That's a good suggestion! Thanks DST4ME. I can definitely choose a downgraded video card now while waiting for the new video cards.
Hmm, I hadn't given size much thought, but now you have me thinking about the Velox as an alternative. |

Bolt is not my cup of tea either, I like better airflow and more room to work in

The Velox has a right facing window, vs the window being on the left side on most others. Just be aware in case your desk setup, like mine, prefers left window.
I also have an ODE from 2011 and love it. It is big. Heavy I don’t care since it never moves. Edited by bprat22 - 26 Oct 2017 at 2:32am |

Too bad the Lumos doesn't come with a white exterior paint option. Dimensionally, the Lumos seems like a good alternative to the Bolt X. |

I agree. The custom exterior finish available on the Velox has me checking it out, even if it means moving my setup around.

I don't know that airflow would really be an issue unless you're doing serious overclocking and running some heavy duty apps like say, a lot of video rendering. DS does a good job with cable management so not like there's a lot of junk in the way.
That said, yes it is true there's not as much room to work inside a Bolt X compared to a larger case. Personally I like the smaller size, especially compared to my monstrous old case. |
