Just wondering as I wait for my Dream Computer.
Overclocking the Q9450 and what are DSO's results in the past?
Has anyone here OC a Q9450?
I understand that OCing has no guarantees as to the performance of
one chip to the next.

My build includes :
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache)
Motherboard: Asus Maximus Formula (Intel X38) (Supports CrossFire) upgraded to (Asus Rampage) by DSO thanks Kelly.
System Memory: 2GB DDR2 Corsair at 1066MHz Dominator DHX 

Doing a bit of reading on OC and found this.

They were able to reach 3.7GHz :) :)  ,but with a different motherboard.

I have this chip as well in my DSO computer.  I am using the 780i XFX board and DSO was able to OC this chip to 3.5Ghz (liquid chilled).  Has been stable thus far.

every expierence overclocking will be different, as you said theres no garentee how well it will go, id say your best answer is that yes, its capable of going nice and high but there is little more you could do on the hardware end to help that.
ill be spending some real time in the next 2 weeks working on a 9450 OC, if youre still looking for advice then ill be sure to report back

I am looking forward to reading ever ones  Q9450 OC work.

overclocking is still a little corn-fusingConfused
but ill keep reading and leave it to DS for now.

Overclocking is a bad habit some times i would rather just read about it, then play Games. (not good)

Overclocking reminds me of guys that like to "hot rod" their cars. They like to push their equipment to the limit of what it's capable of and keep tweaking and modifying to get better and better results.

I'd rather just drive fast (play games), so overclocking isn't really for me. I might use an overclocked machine, but I wouldn't make the adjustments myself. I'd go to a certified mechanic (read, DSO) LOL! LOL

Being a gamer rather than an overclocker isn't really a bad thing! Embarrassed

This is exactly how i felt before i started shopping for my new rig, i thought overclocking was just begging for trouble for little to no difference. After I ordered I ended up having to re-apply the OC dso did for me via the phone. Even that scared me, but it got my feet wet. Since then I've read more and tried more things with my overclock settings than i care to list, i have 3 or 4 folders and a pile of paper on my desk. Bottom line is that a solid overclock will let you get way more performance out of your machine for no risk but there is definately a limit. Pushing something high enough to see a tangible performance difference is a far cry from maxing everything out, which is stupid and gets you little more than bragging rights
 
this is part of my self help program where i am trying to convince myself not to go over 1.5vcore bc it isnt worth it! right? RIGHT!

I cant seem to get my dang E8500 to hold stable over 4 =/. maybe im not giving it enough juice..who knows..lol.

Hi, here's my build: http://digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=160877 and with stage 3 cooling they bumped my CPU to 3.2 GHz.  Your mileage may vary :)
 
Keep in mind that stage 3 case fans are on the louder side.  The case fans are the dominant sound on this configuration

I am  the proud owner of a new DS built beast it came today and i am installing games as I type. So far i have only looked at the CPU at 3000.0Mz on the CPU-Z software.
Not sure how to post pic yet, i will as soon as i learn how.
The fan noise is like music at the moment, all the fan controllers are at max. have not gone much over 34c :) on the fan controller

I was running the test and I had a power outage the battery back up kicked in and the test just ran on i don't know if it had any affect on the # or not?

My Q9450 came from DSO with an OC at 3.2 and its currently working great with Stage 3 air cooling (which isn't all that loud to me with my 950i case even with fans manually set to 100%).
 
Looking at my temps and the settings they applied I think there is room to push for a bit more speed. Everything is just on auto-settings except for CPU voltage is at 1.4 (1.376 actual shown in CPU-Z).

My max core temps under full load with Prime 95 running are in the mid-low 60s and the case temps in the mid-high 50s. Heavy gaming it doesn't goa bove 40C case temp, 29 at idle.

I don't really want to mess with a stable system for a while longer, but will update if I manage a better OC down the line.

My computer has the Q9450 o/c'ed to 3.2 by DS...... Very stable.... Stage 3 cooling and quite for the amount of fans that's in my rig. I'm a flight simmer and the FSX sim is a resource hog on the CPU..... My Q9450 handles it fine...

As a point of reference, I managed to up the speed on my Q9450 over the weekend to 3.467 adjusting nothing but the FSB speed. With Stage 3 air cooling my temps are still ok - core temps of high 60s running Prime 95 Small FFTs which seems to crank the temps more then anything else I have tried. I did quite a bit of testing and played a few hours of Crysis with no issues at all.
 
I tried to match your 3.6 and it would boot and run for a little bit but Prime 95 crashed it within a few minutes. My guess is a few tweaks and I could get it working there, but didn't really want to play around with too many settings before I study up some more on what my limits are for voltages with breaking something.
