According to some recent AMD documents, in just about one month, on August 12, the performance crown will again switch owners and move from Santa Clara to Sunnyvale. Yes August 12 is the debut day of the Radeon HD 4870 X2 aka R700 aka Spartan graphics card.

Featuring two RV770 chips on one PCB, the R700 will offer the power of 1600 Stream Processors and 2GB of GDDR5 memory plus a 2 x 256-bit memory interface, DirectX 10.1 support, PCI-Express 2.0 connectivity, UVD 2 (Unified Video Decoder) and CrossFireX. The latest reports put the Radeon HD 4870 X2 in the $500+ price zone so we hope you saved quite a few (Euro) cents in these last few months.

 1GB (512MB x 2) is reported being 499, any idea about the 2GB (1GB x2)?

And can you xfire the 2GB for inhuman videocard specs?

Probably waiting on a die shrink to a 55nm process for the GT200 chip.

It should be interesting to see how this part fares when compared with the HD3870x2 or the 9800gx2 in terms of drivers and final performance where it matters- in games.
