Hi all.  I'm looking to get a new computer to replace this old dell that I would have to completely gut to upgrade, but I've been out of touch with the hardware side of it all so long I can't seem to get focus on one configration.

For the most part I play WoW and a few not-so-intensive 3d point/click adventure games, but at the moment that's all this pc can handle.   To give those that play WoW a bit of perspective, in Dalaran my FPS drops to 3-5 (so those of you complaining about 35-ish fps are making me jealous).

The room the computer is located in tends to get pretty hot during the summer with no way to relieve the heat other than waiting out nightfall.  The resolution is set to 1440x900.  I need the machine to run as quiet as possible and be upgradable as this has to last 4+ years.

My budget for this mess is set to $2,000 and everytime I reach in to configure what I think will work, I find my budget waving to me in the distance.

If heat is an issue in the summer wouldn't the V8 be a better choice? Just curious as he has an OC'd cpu.

its better to have the 1000w PSU then the v8, the GeminII has done 3.8GHz on air, with a 750w the future GPU upgrades might not be covered.

but its something to think about for the OP. Sodius's build is a good one also.

if you don't think you will ever go go pass 2 x 260+ for GPU then go with sodius's build.

if you see yourself upgrading to future GPUs then stick with the 1000w PSU.

IMO the best build would be to have both v8 and 1000w PSU, if you can go for that, then I'm sure all 3 of us highly recommend that.

I feel we kept really really close to his 2k budget. The 1904.00 don't worry about the PSU at this time or 2026.00 with the PSU upgraded. Ermm

I may have to adjust my budget a bit then.   The power supply was the issue that started the whole "if you give a mouse a cookie" effect.  The cooling however is a huge concern for me and one of the reasons I kept going over budget fidling with the configuration.  I kept feeling that liquid cooling was a must for when the room turns into a sauna during the summer.   Is air cooling enough to keep things from frying or do you all think it would be wise to save up a bit more for a heavier cooling solution?

I noticed all the other tickets were set up with air cooled.  Here is a liquid cooled option.  For $30 more, you could go with the H2O: Stage2: Cool-IT Eliminator (Thermoelectric) CPU Cooler.

Is a liquid cooled pc rather technical to maintain?
I live in GA in an old house, and was wondering If I need to go that route?

I like my V8 but I think the LC will provide better cooling and the best opportunity to get a better overclock for a given chip.

I would say if you computer location gets as hot as I am thinking then I would go with no less then the V8 but LC might be the better option. Maintaining LC is a piece of cake and your heat issue is a thing of the past. Before we installed central air this room with 5 machines running nearly 24/7 and 5 people here got really unbearable in the summer. Our old gateways handle the heat fairly well with very little to no hassles. So I am thinking the V8 should be just fine but you know the heat situation better than I. Remember buy a peace of mind. Cool

Well I guess I'll have to save the liquid cooling solution for the next big computer down the line.  That sounds like something you should go all in on if you're going with it at all.   I've done some adjusting and I think this is what I'm going for, but I'd like to get opinions:

I opted to go for the 750w power supply instead, went with 6gb of ram and decided to go with the 280 vs the 260.   Is there a big difference between the 280 and the 285 in terms of performance?

"As you can see, the GeForce GTX 285 runs 7% faster than the GeForce GTX 280 it replaces, while its stream processors and memory are clocked 11% and 12% higher than the GTX 280 respectively. This basically puts it on par with many of the factory overclocked GeForce GTX 280 boards that are out there in terms of performance, and also helps to establish a little bit of separation from many of the 216-shader GeForce GTX 260 cards that are OC'ed. " Cool

I don't think the 280 is worth the extra cost to be honest with you, specially in your resolution.

look at left 4 dead with 260,280,285 and 295 all in in 1680 x 1050:

-----------------------------------------------------------

so now you are at 1440x900 so the above I want you to look at 1600 x 1050

260 fps: 75

280 fps: 88

285 fps: 94

295 fps: 137

now keep in mind that once you are over 60fps higher fps won't make much of a difference in game playing, since 60fps is what is needed to have a smooth play.

at your resolution of 1440 x 900, an oced 260+ will give you all the performance you need, I don't' think that over $100 is worth it for the 280 GTX at your resolution.

also its a bad idea to drop the 1000w PSU and go with a higher GPU. GPU takes 2 seconds to upgrade/change, the PSU is not as easy to upgrade, also the 1000w opens up future upgrading.

I was thinking the 280 for now with another added in later, figuring a monitor upgrade would cause me to increase resolutions in the future.   The power supply downgrade was more of a reality to the house it's going into.  As much as I'd like to have that much power available in the future, the "now" simply won't let something that juiced up run along with everything else sharing the power.   Would 2x the 260 work well for a higher resolution if I added another video card in the future?

Adding another 260 in the future would be cost effective in case you ever upgrade your monitor to a higher resolution.
