So here I am deployed to Iraq due to be home in a few weeks and I want a new rig. I was debating between AMD and Intel but wasw told to go Intel right now so thats what I am doing. Check out this rig and let me know what you think. FYI...I play all kinds of games from FPS to MMORPG to anything else that interests me...most of my time is spent on WoW right now so I know this is overkill but I want a system that will play anything I want smoothly incase my interests change. So here it goes..... Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core)
Motherboard: XFX X58 3X SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports Triple SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified by mushkin enhanced Power Supply: 750W Digital Storm Certified
Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 2x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA)
Set 1 Raid Options: Configure HDD Set 1 to a Raid 0 Config Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition)
Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 3: High-Performance Liquid Chilled FrostBite System For CPU & Two Video Cards
Boost Processor: Stage 2: Overclock the processor between 4.0GHz to 4.2GHz (Requires H20 Cooling Upgrade)
Boost Video Card: Yes, Overclock the video card(s) as much as possible with complete stability Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) With Windows 7 Upgrade Coupon
I know I could probably do without the liquid cooling on the GPU's but what the hell...it looks awesome right! Thanks in advance for any suggestions/input!
Edit: this may be a bit better than copy/paste
Monitor is a 24" Dell (1920x1200)

Thanks DST4ME. I hear what you are saying about the cases but I really like the 950si so I will probably stick with that. I definitly like your build though and will probably go with it for the most part. I plan on ordering within a week or 2 so I will let you know what I go with..Thanks again!

for gaming at 1900 x 1200 you can't build a more powerfull build, if you ask me just go with my build you can't make it better.

I totally agreee with you believe me. I only have one question...would it be advantagous to step up to Stage 2 Proc OC? If for nothing else to take advantage of the LC system? Or would I not really notice that much of a performance difference?

for gaming and at 1900 x 1200 stage 2 oc will not give me any better peformance.
the LC will give you better load temps no matter what, so you are putting it to use. |

You may wanna look at the prebuilts. Those new ones are pretty good deals. At your range, the enthusiast 4 seems good. Though it's extreme overkill graphics wise and i'm not sure how 2x295's do air cooled.

Hmmm..haven't even checked out the new prebuilts....just came on shift and went straight to the forums. I am heading to check them now out of curiosity. Also I may upgrade monitors in the future I am not sure....heck I am not even sure if that is the monitor resolution that I have to be honest. I ordered it when I first got to Iraq and had it shipped home...It is sitting in a box in my basement waiting for me. I will have to get ahold of the wife to double check it for me to be certain.

double check it cause if its less then 1900 x 1200 then you won't even need to drop money on a second 275.

Well my wife said she can't find the resolution on the box anywhere?! I am going to go ahead and just go with the SLI setup anyway I think...for bragging rights at least. I may upgrade the monitor in the near future to take advantage of it anyway and just give the kids the Dell for their computer. I am getting very close to the purchase...just have to call the wife and have her transfer funds...I just want to be absolutly sure that this is what I want first.

Well I have made my decision...I am going with the DST4ME's build with a small change. I am going to opt for the 4890's in Xfire just because I have had good luck with ATI graphics and plus looking at the benchmarks they are pretty much equal to the 275's though they cost a fraction more. Hopefully I am able to get it ordered by this time tomorrow. Thanks for all the help!

Go with the 275s...trust me. You will be happy you did. They run much quieter and cooler than the ATI cards.
I've been an ATI fan for a while but I believe the Nvidia cards are just better and worth the couple dollars extra. |

if you're dead set on getting the 4890's, you should look to newegg for them. the prices tend to be much, much better for ATI cards than DS.
I'm glad someone is considering giving ATI some love though! It's not like they're a "bad" product, just not as good as the 275's. If you can find them cheap, though, i don't see why not... |

Gah...I hate banks! To transfer from one account to another takes up to 3 days so I have a little more time to play around with the build. As much as I want to throw in 4890's I am going to fight the urge and go with the 275's. Maybe when ATI pushes the next series of GPU's I will give them a shot in another machine

Well it has been 21 days since my order was in Phase 1 and I am still waiting for it to ship. It hit phase 6 yesterday so hopefully it will ship today. I am just having a hard time trying to figure out why it is taking soooooo long! I got an email saying that the progress was delayed due to parts being out of stock but I was then told I received the wrong email and that it was not meant for me. If I were the kind business owner I would upgrade someones shipping free of cost for the wait

Looks like a killer rig, and nearly the same configuration I got, too.
Good to see another vet on the boards, it's been a decade since I was over there (and I'm in no rush to return, bleah). Glad to hear you made it home still breathing, and thank you for my freedom!
Man, 21 days . . I'd be chewing the wallpaper off the walls by that point. It'll make it's arrival all that much sweeter. Pics! Edited by Psimon - 30 Sep 2009 at 2:23pm |

My system finally shipped today and is due to arrive in a week....on my wifes birthday..lol. She is going to hate it! They got the 920 OC'd to 3.8 stable. Idle temps were 34c and under load overnight was 80c. I am going to be going nuts for the next week checking the FedEx sight every 2 hours
I will be sure to post a bunch of pics once she is up and running Edited by Metalhead - 01 Oct 2009 at 8:39pm |

Well I was expecting my rig today but alas it did not arrive I have been checking the FedEx site several times a day to see if it updated the location but it never did until about an hour ago. It is now 70 miles from my front door! I wish I could just go to the warehouse and pick it up but I will have to suffer until tomorrow I suppose. I got new batteries in the camera so I will post pics tomorrow or friday.
