Topic: HDD Raid Configurations Posted: 29 Apr 2010 at 1:29pm |
Hello,
I am hoping to place an order for one of computer configurations. I have heard so many good things about your organization.
I pretty much understand most the lingo used in computer technology world, but one thing still slips past me. Hard drive raid configurations.
I am considering to add an external hard drive. I am thinking of the Black Armor model from Seagate. When you move up in models, it adds a raid configuration to it in order to use it.
I added two hard drives into Set 1 of the Hard Drive list in the configuration. What happens when I add Raid 0 to it? Does it make the drives work faster? How would setting up the internal hard drives affect the raid configuration on the external model?

RAID 0 treats two hard drives as a single hard drive, offering the benefits of speedier access to data. In general, it runs faster.
RAID 1 allows you to have a back-up drive, essentially. Mainly used for servers. This is a poor explanation, but that should give you some idea. The drawback to RAID 0 is that if one hard drive fails, both fail. Most people on the forum will likely tell you to go with an SSD for your main hard drive and a large HDD for your storage drive. Good advice if you ask me. |

If you want to share your budget, main usage of the PC, and the resolution you're going to use on your monitor, we (esp DST) can make some recommendations.

Well, I do have some thoughts on my mind about what I might be looking for. You did mention a chassis I have considered and that my son has, the Coolermaster Storm Sniper. Unfortunately, he didn't get it through DS. I was hoping to do that, but the money I have been waiting for is, well, I am still waiting for. My ex-wife got him a custom built (from my configuration) from one of your competitors (starts with "C", ends with a "C").
The money I would be using hopefully soon for my computer will be coming from a different source that I wasn't expecting. I don't know the amount I can spend yet, but I am looking for a figure between 4 and 5k.
I will be using it primarily for web development - working with Dreamweaver, working with programming languages (if I can ever learn them), using WordPress and creating Blogs, working with Apache Server, Visual Studio, using Photoshop, InDesign, Fireworks, maybe some Illustrator and Flash. When my son comes over, he takes the computer and plays the online games like WOW, Star Trek Online, Aion, etc.
People have been suggesting I get an SSD for my primary hard drive, and get a larger hard drive for storage. With what I mentioned, how big should be going for in an SSD? I know they are more expensive and I am not sure what programs other than the OS I should have on it.
The monitor I am using right now is a Viewsonic VG2427wm that has a native resolution of 1900 x 1080. I am thinking of giving this montior to my son and buying the NEC EA Series 26" LCD Monitor for myself. I believe its native resolution is 1900 x 1200.
I'm all ears on your thoughts for a configuration. Let me know if I should consider SLI/CrossFire X, Liquid Cooling and if so, what stage you recommend and so forth.

trekker763 I'm just a customer, I dont' work for DS, but let me assure you that the company you mention is not DS's competitor, cause they are not as good as DS.
If DS was not the best I would not drop 10 grand on my pc with them, I looked at everybody else before I gave DS my money I guess you have another thread, I gave you config there, try to keep one thread so we don't get confused when we help you let me know what you think about the build in the other thread |

Hello,
I originally did just one thread. When I finished it, I was told that it was too long and would not be processed so to speak.
So I wrote another thread thinking that the other one would not be there. After I posted the message, I noticed the original one I wrote. So that's why there are 2 threads with the same subject title.
Sorry.
