So after having lurked on these forums for a few weeks, there is no doubt that virtually all of you are more technically inclined than me. So, I'd love any input on the following build. I dropped to one GTX 980 Ti because I don't have a 4k monitor yet. My thinking is to be able to add a second card in SLI mode in a bit when I get the new monitor. I'm not yet doing 4k gaming. Mostly playing MMOs and other standard fare (FPS etc).

Any constructive criticisms or ideas? Also, does anyone know if 1000W power supply is enough to run both cards and three drives (I'll add another soon). Plus I want to use an M2 SSD at some point on the G5 motherboard.

Thank you in advance!

Budget:
$4k (ish)

Expectations:
Gaming machine for the next 3-5 years (with updates). Not doing 4K yet, but want to leave that option open for future upgrades (like a second 980 Ti card).

1. any particular reason you don't want a full-sized mobo?  this m-atx is gonna look kinda small in this big case.  you'll have fewer expansion slots as well.  not a big deal if you don't plan on adding in multiple pcie cards (graphics, sound, storage).

2. 1000W is more than enough.

3. this kind of goes along with the mobo selection, but why this big case for such a "small" build?  if you were going for an elaborate custom water cooling config i'd get it, but for just cooling a cpu you don't need lots of radiator.  if you really like the m-atx mobo you could considerably shrink this rig down to a mid-sized case and save money.

I guess I didn't realize this was a small mobo. Is the Gigabyte Gaming 3 full size? I liked the Gigabyte mobos because they have the creative sound chips on board. But I'm not wed to it.

What mobo would you suggest for that case?

And, THANK YOU for the comments. I really appreciate it.

i'd suggest the Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI if you don't want to spend more for an Asus.  i prefer Asus brands myself for the better UEFI bios.  for example, my Z170 has an Asus Z170 Deluxe in it.

Some good advise from dr188. The Hailstorm case is a big case that is designed for full liquid cooling. If it was my build I would go with a Velox case especially with the air cooled Strix GPUs. The Strix dumps a lot of warm/hot air into the case. The Velox design is great for air cooling of the GPUs or CPU. If you like big cases then the Apollo is a good choice. If you love the looks of the Hailstorm then go for it.

I would also go with the 850 Pro SSD instead of the 850 EVO. The Pro has better technology and way better warranty.

If you want a GIGABYTE Motherboard then get an ATX size.

Frank

Thanks Frank. I appreciate the feedback. Maybe I'll switch to the Velox then and get the ASUS gaming MOBO.

If you're just doing gaming, I'd stick with the Z170 platform...higher core frequencies, potential iGPU boosts in the near future, better I/O for more advance storage and peripherals.

Also, you'll want to go with a radiator that uses 140mm fans for the Velox.
